With Flexible Recording Mode on the E30 and a 2 hour 22 minute movie:
1) Set the FR mode recording time on the E30 to 2 hour 23 minutes.
2) Start recording on the E30 and playback on the LD player at the same time.
3) When the LD hits the end of the side, hit pause on the E30.
4) When...
Thanks for all the help, but it's all moot now. They do not provide the 6" dishes anymore. The install guys says they use a grill, which I believe he said is about 18" or something. That's kinda big for my setup, and unfortunately will irk my condo board. You can't even get them even if you...
Does anyone have experience with Look TV?
I've just ordered it but I don't know anybody else with it. The reason I ordered it is because I like the channel packages better and their price was better. Plus I'm in direct line of sight to the transmission tower. The fact the dish is only 6" wide...
Check my sig. It's a bit dated, but there is some useful info there. As Michael has said: DVD-R (Authoring) highest compatibility, but consumer recorders do not work with it. DVD-R (General) and +R very close. DVD-RW and +RW also very close, but both significantly worse than DVD-R and...
Memorex DVD-R are a mid-tier brand. They are reported to work better than the cheapie discs, but not as well as Maxells etc. Disc burn quality is best indicated by playback at the end of the disc, and at high bitrates.
The 500W (and I assume 500WM) will auto convert PAL --> NTSC in the player. However, I'm told it's similar to the Apex AD-600A, which does a pretty poor job of it. If you want PAL-->NTSC, everyone seems to swear by players like the Malata N996.
It's almost as cheap to get a small computer laptop with DVD drive, and flash the drive to region free. Pros: You have a full-fledged computer Bigger screen You can carry your MP3 collection with you on the hard drive. Cons: It takes time to boot up and its less portable Shorter...
What I've read on the net (mainly about the E20 though, since the E30 is so new).
E20/E30 and 985 video quality similar overall. Some say in some areas slightly better with E20 and the reverse with other areas.
E30 does not have Firewire, so must use analogue input for MiniDV. Quality is...
The A320 is reported to work with DVD-R, although YMMV of course. Before you scrap the A320 though, first try better media, if you've been using cheap stuff. I find cheap media is not reliable, and I get the same results that you do. I have had major problems on my PC burner with Princo DVD-R...
I'm probably not the right person to ask because I don't have any set top recorder at the moment. However, here are my 2 pennies.
I too would love to get the DMR-HS2, precisely because of the hard drive and because of the Firewire input. This offers very much flexibility. The only thing it's...
Well, supposedly the E30 is less picky for media than the E20, but YMMV. As for a PC burner, I totally disagree. I have a PC burner myself, but it does not at all replace a set top burner. Just recording a TV show would be a major undertaking with a PC burner, and indeed most people would...
There is a review of the Philips DVDR 985 in the Sept. issue of Sound & Vision apparently. I haven't read it though. P.S. The arrival of the Panasonic DMR-E30 is going to make things interesting at brick&mortar stores. Prices on the older DMR-E20 had been dropping precipitously online, but...
Well, depends on your needs. The new Panasonic goes for about $550-600, and it's by far the cheapest of the models out there. If you don't much recording though you might consider just buying a good quality $200 player right now and keep the VCR for now, depending on your preferences and your...
I don't think the presence of a hard drive eliminates the need for a rewritable DVD format. Remember that the hard 40 GB drive only holds about about 8 hours worth of video at the highest quality setting. The presence of a hard drive opens up your options but I think a DVD-R/hard drive system is...

By the way, the lack of Firewire input seems to be the price one pays for saving a few hundred bucks, but then again, people seem to have good results with S-Video. YMMV.
The new DMR-HS2 has a Firewire input.
In your shoes I'd probably just buy the cheapest one on the market. That would be the Panasonic DMR-E30. Its predecessor, the DMR-E20, has been quite popular. The E20 has supposedly been less glitchy with slightly better image quality from what I've read, but I don't have any personal experience...
The 985 firmware update is mirrored here. I'm not sure about the region specifics, etc. Better read about it before installing it, but I'm guessing this is for North America only.
