West Side Story - Spielberg remake (2021)

Agree 2x over with this take. WSS is perfectly fine but by no mean transcendent. (All that hambone overacting, reflective of a time when hambone acting was considered...good? Thank God for Brando's ascension!) And who cares about Oscars. Which by no means makes a film untouchable (or even...

    Favorite Old School 70mm Cinemas

In suburban Chicago, the three best for 70MM in terms of screen size and sound were: Golf Mill, Old Orchard and, the best of the best, Edens in Northbrook, IL (home of Ferris Bueller), specifically Edens 2. Huge curved screen, sound not to be believed. "The Right Stuff" was off the charts there...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection - in 4k UHD Blu-ray

A story maybe just me finds amusing: I was expecting a wine shipment from a wine club, always something to look forward to. Being out of the house late last week I found one of those hated FedEx notes on the door saying the shipment needs a signature. (Alcohol of course.) Knowing I wouldn't be...

Looking for Advice on Ripping my CD Collection

I ripped my expansive CD collection using Apple Lossless on my computer and then saved everything to a 128GB thumb drive. I then put the thumb drive into the back of the Bluesound Node2i I'd purchased, which connects to my AVR via RCA cables. The Bluesound app then lets you access all the music...

Upcoming slate of 4k releases 2021 (all studios)

Here's what Deakins has to say on his website (itself a follow up to a podcast on Shawshank): "I have yet to discover a decent version. They are either blue or brown, the trees are a vivid green or the night work has no color. Sometimes all these at the same time!" Fingers crosses WB steps up!

Upcoming slate of 4k releases 2021 (all studios)

Excited about Shawshank. Wonder if they consulted with Roger Deakins, the DOP. He lamented on his podcast (Team Deakins, a must for those interested in the art of cinematography) that he was unable to find a transfer of the film he thought did his intentions justice and that he'd love to have a...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

From the Digital Bits, who reached out to the restoration team for this release: Meanwhile, I have an update for you on a title Dennis looked at here at The Bits a couple of weeks ago, specifically the Paramount Presents Blu-ray edition of To Catch a Thief (reviewed here). Many readers...

    Dolby Vision

Seeing that Dolby Vision is a more robust version of HDR (vs. HDR10) due to its ability to provide HDR metadata on a scene-by-scene, even frame-by-frame basis, it should provide you with richer color, more detail in the light and dark areas of scenes, and far better contrast. Now, whether you'll...

    Audyssey mt32.. and speaker setting(largevssmall)

John, this is wrong. Sorry mate. THX recommendations apply to all speakers. Whether you buy in is absolutely personal taste. There are no things as THX speakers. There are speakers by name a brand that have been certified by the THX quality control program.

    Audyssey mt32.. and speaker setting(largevssmall)

Agree. Saying setting wrong was wrong word. Personally I prefer a bit more center and less surround. All personal preference! Regards!

    Audyssey mt32.. and speaker setting(largevssmall)

Set all speakers to small. THX recommends 80 crossover. Always works fine for me. Do NOT use LFE +main! You should be good to go. Regarding Audyssey, some tips: it usually sets the center too low and the surround too high. I like to tweak them accordingly (which does NOT mess with the overall...

    LG OLED Burn In

A Foot Lambert (fL) is a measure of luminance in the standard definition range (SDR) world. (More recently, in this brave new HDR world, they've adopted a new luminance measure, candela per square meter (cd/m2) or "nit", one nit = 0.291863508 fL.) In the calibration world—at least according to...

    LG OLED Burn In

Sorry about your issue. Truly a bummer. I'll say this, though: if/when you get a new OLED (and I hope you do, they're far and away the best picture), either get the TV professionally calibrated or, at minimum, whatever picture mode you use (consider ISF modes) turn the "OLED" setting down below...

Stand alone SACD player vs Samsung Blu-Ray player

I use my Sony-800X. Great 4K player, great SACD player. 2-in-1. Can be had during sales for well under $200. Solid build, great piece of kit.

Dolby Vision pass-through AVR or TV?

You'll get differing opinions on this but I feel it's just fine to pass the signal thru the AVR. Certainly makes wire management to TV easier and I don't feel if affects the picture. One thing though: make sure the AVR isn't doing any processing to the signal. You want a straight pass-thru...

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ Bohemian Rhapsody & A Star is Born (2018) -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Well said, Mr. Harris. It's an exciting time for A/V, a millions miles from when I'd hook my boombox to the VCR to add more aural oomph to the VHS pan-and-scan rental of Apocalypse Now I was watching on the family's 20" color CRT.

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ 2001: a space odyssey -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

But "dispersions" works in a tongue-in-cheek way! One definition of dispersion is "the separation of light into colors by refraction or diffraction with formation of a spectrum." And since the conversation had shifted towards colors... Anyway, wasn't trying to be snarky in my original comment...

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ 2001: a space odyssey -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Well played Mr. Harris. I admit it took me a beat to get the use of “dispersions” (surely someone as educated as Harris knows the word is “aspersions!”) but once it finally rang my rather slow bell I had a good laugh. Well done!

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Superman: The Movie -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Agree that calibration for HDR is very scattershot at the moment, a real wild west as opposed to SDR because of differences in tone mapping/display, display limitations in relation to color, etc. Regarding CMS calibration in HDR, in my experience, the issue you mention is exclusive to LG OLEDs...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Superman: The Movie -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Mr. Harris, thanks for the review. Quick question: when you note the older Superman transfer was lacking, I'm wondering if you're referring to the original Blu-ray that came out in the late aughts, or the Warner Archive Collection release that came out this time last year? (Which not only...

    4k...Okay, Now I Get It!

Ron et al, hate to be that guy, but what you're responding to isn't the 4K resolution, which, unless you're sitting very close to a very large TV isn't that noticeable over 1080p (think 720p v. 1080p), but rather the High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) afforded most 4K...

What is the best 4k player outside of the Oppo?

Absolutely love my Sony X-800, which I snagged for like $150 on sale. Solid, substantial build, SACD playback, terrific Blu-ray and UHD (HDR10) quality, capable remote control (esp. compared to the worthless one that comes with the Samsung player). Only issue is that it doesn't pass DV. Would...

Gosford Park (2001) coming from Arrow

Absolutely terrific news; truly a classic. With the success of Downton Abbey, surprised this didn't happen earlier but beggars can't be choosers. Now all we need is a proper Blu-ray of Stanley Tucci's Big Night!

    Choices on replacement display

Consider TCL. I have one in my basement for gaming for the kids. The TCL is outstanding value for the money. 4K. Dolby Vision. HDR10. Roku built in. Reviews across the board gush. (One example: https://www.cnet.com/products/tcl-55r615-2018-roku-tv/review/) Calibrates spectacularly. (I'm a...
