Aaron, Matsushita has been using the Re-Master upsampling feature for awhile. The Technics DVD-A10 first-generation DVD-Audio player I sold recently has it, and I didn't think the Re-Master feature on that player did much of anything. Some magazine reviews a couple of years ago actually said...
For those who are interested, panasonic.com states that the 'F65 and 'F85 are/will be available in both black and silver. Thus far, I've only seen the 'F65 in black and the 'F85 in silver.
In briefly comparing the 'F65 and 'F85 on panasonic.com I noticed that the 'F65 lacks the "Audio Only" feature. This shuts off the video circuitry. Some feel that engaging the Audio Only feature improves the sound quality through eliminating interference caused by the video circuitry. Whether or...
Lance, thanks for the additional info. It would be odd if the 'F65 would default to the DVD-Audio layer. Could it be the world's first stereo-only DVD-Audio player? That's all I need for my second system, but I still might go with the 'F85. I found it show a bit better build quality than the...
Lance, excellent thought process on your part. I didn't realize that Panasonic was using the same chipset in all of its players. Knowing that, what you said sounds feasible. So, what if you try to play stereo DVD-Audio tracks on the 'F65? The only problem is that the firmware may be set to...
John, I was suprised to see a Re-Master button on the 'F65. As for the stores, I have found Best Buy to be much better on hi-rez software (both SACD and DVD-Audio), but Circuit City is better on hi-rez hardware at the moment. The Circuit City I was in yesterday had the 'F85 and the Sony...
John, I saw this on an 'F65 at my local Circuit City yesterday and found it curious. I assumed the meant "DVD Audio", as in audio from a DVD-Video disc, as opposed to the hi-rez DVD-Audio format.
I saw the 'F85 at Circuit City today. Construction looks to be very solid for the money. They didn't have the 'S55S, and I asked a salesman to look for it in their computer system hoping it might be coming in. It wasn't in the system. My guess is that Circuit City won't be getting it in. That...
Chris, I too have seen the 'S35S locally. The 'S35S is built quite well for the money, so I am hoping that is indication of how the 'S55S is built. Anyway, I too do not expect much of a discount on the 'S55S. I mean, you get DVD-Audio and progressive scan for $130! I'm not going to get greedy!
Chris, thanks for the info. I'll probably wait to get it locally unless I see a significant discount by mail (authorized dealer). I don't pay sales tax here in Delaware. :) I'd also like to wait for more reviews.
Chris, if you don't mind my asking, what did you pay for the 'S55S through J&R with shipping? Given the low retail price of the player, I can't imagine they are offering much of a discount.
Crutchfield.com now has the 'F85S listed for $150. Like newegg.com crutchfield.com states an ETA of May 8th. Here's a link:

Newegg.com lists the 'S55S and 'F85S, but does not have them in stock as of this writing. They list an ETA of May 6th for the 'S55S and May 8th for the 'F85S. If those dates are correct, hopefully I will see players locally this week.
Nick,
Thanks for the link. Newegg.com is a new egg for me. I'll check them out. :)
Mike,
I'm not expecting deep discounts on any of these players. Frankly, that would be awfully greedy. I mean, with the 'S55S, we're talking about getting DVD-Audio and progressive-scan output for just...
My trip to Best Buy was unsuccessful today. They had the 'S35S and 'F65, the two budget, non-DVD-Audio models, but did not have the 'S55S or 'F85.
I also went to Tweeter, but they had neither DVD-Audio player in their computer system. The salesman said he didn't know if they would be getting...
Danny, thanks. Well, I didn't make it over to Best Buy tonight. I'll be heading over tomorrow to see if they have either model. At this point, I just want to give them a look. I am in no rush to buy a player. While I don't expect there to be any real competition for the Panasonic players at...
Lance, I plan on heading to Best Buy this evening to see the 'F85. I'm still leaning to the 'S55S, but I'll consider the changer.
Has anyone seen the 'S55S at Best Buy or Circuit City?
Danny, thanks for the info. and the picture. The 'F85 looks a lot like the 'CP72, 'CP67, etc. I think Matsushita has gone too far in making its changers small. Look at the display on the front panel? It's ridiculous! Frankly, I'll probably go with the 'S55S and buy a DVD-Audio disc with the...
Dan,
That's the '3800, not the '3900. ;) No, the '3800 will remain in the main stereo system. I'm looking for a DVD-Audio player for the second system. Anyway, the '3800 ain't leaving my house. It's a killer machine! :)

On a positive note, the remote has a "Group" button. That's very important to me, as I have no TV in the room with my second stereo system. The Group button should enable me to play most DVD-Audio discs without a TV.
Here's a picture of the remote:
Crutchfield has the new Panasonic DVD-S55S progressive-scan DVD-S55S DVD-Audio player in stock for just $130! Here is a link:
