    Dish Network Picture Artifacts

Drake, I don't think you'll be able to improve your satellite pq too much by cables, etc. What you're experiencing is unfortunately par for the course. Your Mit HD widescreen accentuates the mediocre quality of most satellite sd channels. The line multiplier will often make the picure fuzzy...

    Mad Max SE

Gosh, I haven't seen that movie in years. I think I remember that the US release of the film had a bad dubbed sountrack. I guess it was assumed the audience wouldn't understand the Austrailian actors. Are the voices dubbed on the disc, or is my memory faulty? JR

What did everyone get for Christmas for their Systems???

Jaws, Phantom Menance, Forrest Gump, Ronin, 5 Easy Pieces DVDs, and Doors DVD-A. Also, I laid the foundation for some HT purchases in the next few weeks by giving the wife a diamond ring plus a load of other gifts for Christmas. That should mute any criticism of my purchases for quite some...

Important to all of us. Please read and ACT!!!

OK, I signed the petition. Still a little steamed from last Sat. night. I wanted to rent JPIII but all P&S. The Grinch was also all P&S. I've been renting from Blockbuster for 6 or 7 years, but I think I'm going to check out Hollywood Video. JR

A.I. Pan and Scan - LAME Spielberg, LAME!!!

"J6P" - I am also growing tired of the use of this cute abbreviation, which basically refers to the average working American as a philistine who lacks taste and refinement. We are talking about movies here, not fine art, philosophy or literature. If someone wants to argue and point to a...

lousy room layout - B&W decisions

I also have a corner placement. I was able to spread my fronts (B&W 602s) a little over six feet apart. I put my small Velo sub in between the TV and the right front speaker. As Gil suggested, getting the speakers forward of the TV to lessen reflections off the screen helps a lot. My mains...

Looking for a cheap (~$150) CD megachanger.

Depending on what your willing to spend and how much space you have available, you might consider going up to at least 200 CD player. You'll be surprised how many CDs you will end up wanting to put in there. I got my Kenwood 200 CD for about $180 at Circuit City, so the price premium is not...

How much do looks count when purchasing new equipment?

I bought the Outlaw 1050, which isn't quite as ugly in person as it looks in some pictures, but it does look a little bit like a piece of military field equipment. My black B&W 602s are nondescript and aren't works of art either. To the untrained eye they could be mistaken for theater-in-a-box...

Anyone else protect their Remotes with plastic?

My wife likes to read HTF posts for fun and to fuel her sarcasm. I am already an object of her ridicule for my obsessions and this post is not helpful. :) JR

Plz recommend good RECEIVER for under $500

Mike, If you feel you've outgrown your Yamaha, you might hang on and save a little more $$ to get one of the better Onkyos or Denons (Onkyo 797 or Denon 3802 or above). For $500, don't forget about the Outlaw 1050. I had the same Yamaha model as you do for about 3 weeks until I returned it in...

I Filled my SVS with Kitty Litter

Actually, liquid mercury works better than lead or kitty litter because it is heavier by volume. Just pour it in. However, be advised that mercury is extremely poisonous, and will emit deadly vapor after your sub warms up. Just be sure you and your family wear appropriate gas masks while...

Just ordered my new DVD player

I just brought home a JVC XV-SA75GD. Used a 10% discount coupon at BB so I made out pretty well. I had intended to get the new Toshiba SD-4700, but my BB did't have them, so I went with the JVC. The gold is ok I suppose. Doesn't matter, because the look of my components was spoiled anyway...

JVC v. Toshiba DVD - help me decide

I'm leaning toward the Toshiba. It's about $25 cheaper than the JVC and with my 10% discount coupon, I should be paying about $225.00 plus tax. Thomas, I agree with you about the reviews on audioreview.com. There are some thoughtful reviews, but a lot of uncritical reviews that aren't too...

JVC v. Toshiba DVD - help me decide

I am pretty sure I am either going to buy the JVC XV-SA75GD or the Toshiba SD-4700. Both are progressive players and both have DVD-A capability. Has anybody compared this Toshiba with the JVC yet? I know the Toshiba model is new, and there doesn't seem to be much of a buzz on it. If anybody...

No warranty from non-authorized online retailers?

My understanding is that most manufacturers will honor the warranty so long as the product is new and was meant to be distributed in the US. Make sure you're getting the US model. Frankly, the consumer has no reliable means of determining who is, or who is not, an authorized dealer anyway...

    Mice in my sub!!!

It appears mice do in fact enjoy music. My cat likes to lay on top of my Velo sub and thereby discourages rodents from trying to get into it. He even stays up there when I'm cranking music or a movie. Maybe it's like the "Magic Fingers" bed massage. :) JR

    Excessive drive noise from DirectTivo

I can't hear my Philips DSR6000 unless I get my head right next too it. However, a lot of users comment about some level of noise from the drives. I don't think the noise is indicative of a problem though. Apparantly, some units are a little noisier than others for some reason. JR

    Pronto Questions

Thanks for all the replys. You guys have been extremely helpful in supplementing what I learned on http://www.remotecentral.com. quote: True, you can set up the Pronto to be an "everything" machine, but in real life I find that it serves me better as a "master" control center, supplemented...

Serious Question: Why get a 16:9 TV?

I've been seriously considering a HD tv for a while now. I'm also having the 16:9/4:3 internal debate. I'm questioning whether I will be able to tolerate watching tv in any stretch mode, even though I understand that the aspect ratio of the center is preserved. After all, I have the Video...

    Pronto Questions

I'm debating with myself whether to buy a Pronto. The problem is that as I add components, it is getting more difficult for my wife to easily operate the HT. Music vs. Movies - Are we Hypocritical?

Doug, I think some of your assumptions are incorrect. I can't speak for others, but I HATE listening to stereo music in 5 channel or any DSP mode. It almost always sounds terrible. I have never heard a single DSP mode such as "Hall" or "Stadium" that I find tolerable for music or movies. In...

Choosing Between SACD & DVD-A: Is It Too Early?

quote: Why? Because very soon, "universal players" will be out that play everything: CD/VCD/DVD-V/DVD-A/SACD/CD-R/CD-RW, etc, etc. Exactly. As soon as one the above comes out that is quality and reasonably priced, I'm there. There really doesn't have to be a winner or loser, IMO. If cheap...

    Lazy man gets mega changer

Nothing in the documentation of the Kenwood states that it does or does not support CDRs or CDRWs. However, I have put 3 of my CDRs and it plays them fine. I haven't tried a CDRW, but I don't use them for CDs because CDR blanks are cheap enough. My master plan is to burn copies of all my CDs...

    Lazy man gets mega changer

Keith, Thanks for explaining about the flag on dts DVDs. I have always wondered why the Sony wouldn't play dts, since it's connected by toslink to my Outlaw 1050 - the Sony doesn't have an onboard decoder. I didn't know dts audio disks don't also contain a pcm track. JR [Edited last by...
