Yeah RAH, why didn't you use those.........oh......wait....
The requirements of the market tend to supplant the requirements of the artist most of the time, I think they did the best they could with what they were allowed to do.
Darrell S, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking RAH, do you mean "have other restorations by other people taken place"? If so then no, they (I assume) just made new HD transfers of the current material and cleaned them up.
BTW, welcome to HTF Darrell.
There is a huge difference between a video restoration and a film restoration.....but, yeah it would be interesting to see just how much they could affect the already fine image (black levels aside).
Exactly why I asked about preserving the "raw" elements of Vertigo.
So if the current Vertigo DVD has slightly more space allotted to the film that might explain the drop in PQ with the still frame extras....I seem to recall that the updated DVD of The Thing also had less PQ in the still...
Well considering that the question was in response to RAH himself saying that it could be done better today with current technologies I don't think that my asking the question is bringing the current restoration into "doubt", I think the current version is pretty damn good...in fact didn't I say...
I have to ask....are there any plans to do this or would the new processes be a bit cost prohibitive considering the money they have already invested? I personally think the current restoration looks pretty damn good but I would be a liar if I said that I wouldn't like to see what you people...
Thank's Robert, BTW I'm not sure if it came off that way but I absolutely wasn't saying that you were giving the impression that Universal was a "bad guy", very much to the the opposite, it's just that a few folks around here do seem to paint them that way sometimes & IMO tend to forget all that...
I'm curious, in the course of the mid-90's restoration you also preserved the "raw" elements as well, yes? So in the future will it be possible for, if not by you than another passionate film restorer, to actually do a new restoration using these new processes?
Also I just wanted to add...
The old version on Psycho had a fair amount of grain as well though, it is very noticeable?
I actually don't mind a bit of grain, that's film after all, however if it looks like a swarm of gnats is flying all over the place...well that's a little different, but I doubt that is the case here.
I was apprehensive about the overlapping disc holders but from the photo you posted I don't think they look all that bad, certainly manageable.
Thinpak's (I assume you mean the type used in the 3 disc Hellboy SE) would have been more efficient, I agree, but they also seem to have a certain...
