Congrats, John. Patrick, same here! I picked up the Warner set even though I had NxNW and Dial M. Then I picked up the one last Criterion to complete the set.
I love being able to have all the films available to watch. Alas, I have had absolutely no time to watch them (and apologies for not...
I'll pick it up, but there was some serious burn out after the marathon hours to actually watch and review the movies so far...
This is a Broadway tour and catch-up weekend, so I'll try to put at least one up tomorrow, late.

Oops, my mistake...I've corrected that. I just made it back from a Costco run, where they had several of the set left for $73.99. As for the reason of the run... you'll hear me grouse about it when I review AHP: Season 1...
Costco also had most of the Warner releases from last year available...
Of the seven films I have left to see from the set, Torn Curtain--which is Hitchcock's 50th film--is one of the three I've never seen. I think it will be next. But I'm still seeing Serenity first. :)

Bad link. But I went to amazon.co.uk and clicked around. Are those covers going to be solid colors? Eek.
Thanks DaViD!
I'm going to devote some attention to the other Universal titles that crossed the doorstep in the past few days before I continue on with reviews from this set. BTW, I saw...
I posted my thoughts on Family Plot. Don't shoot me when you see me rank it as high as Vertigo. I was a mere 11 years old when I first saw it, and it made an indelible impression that made me an instant fan of Hitchcock.
And now, I have a backlog of other discs... I'll come back to the...
That's the new transfer, right Patrick?
Note that I did not want to embed images that large in the main thread. I scaled them to 480 pixels in width. When you click on my images, they are the same size as Patrick's...
Patrick, any chance you can do something similar?
- Steve
Marco, the new transfer is a mixed bag. On further examination, it looks like they have lightened the image a bit (particularly evident in the fleshtones) and they have changed the geometry by expanding the image from top to bottom. The new image is sharper, too.
So it appears that our choice...
Rear Window is added, along with some initial concluding remarks (is that a contradiction of terms?)
I am still working on the Psycho review--I want to do a few more screen grabs to compare PQ and resolution.
- Steve
And MARNIE. It is a clearly improved transfer.
I'm going to finish the Marnie review, then attempt to get through Psycho and Rear Window. Work called this morning (ugh) but they pay for sets like these, so I can't complain.
At that point, I will publish an overall rating and...
I can't speak to the sound--it was fine to my ears. But the picture has definitely gotten some color correction. I just did one capture to compare:
The old disc is on the left; the new disc is on the right. Note the black bar on the left. There is no black band on either side (except top...
This does concern me, but if you say it's 3-4 frames, that is 1/8 or 1/6 a second. That can be pretty hard to detect. It is certainly for me.
But it gets chalked up with the other issues that distract from the set as a whole. Thanks for bringing this up and making us aware.
- Steve
Okay, thanks to you too, Iain for your contributions. ;)
I guess there are going to be newcomers to this "debate" as you call it, but I just remember how old this got back when the movie was reissued in 1996/1997. Tireless, really. But don't get me wrong... a bad laugh is a bad laugh. I...
MacArthur Park is melting in the dark. :)
Thanks for the great discussion, and especially to Mr. Harris (the film preservationist, not the singer) for his contributions!
- Steve
Well, our choices were dialogue and music with no sound effects--which means the movie is lost forever in the stereo or multi-channel realm--or recreating the effects on top of that.
I'm not a foley artist, but the work described by Mr. Harris and Mr. Katz in their commentary track sounded...
Same thing. I'll clarify in the review on my next update. The filming of the second, less-subtle (non-neon) appearance is mentioned in the documentary.
- Steve
I'd be curious to see the previous edition to see if it is similar. If anyone has the old disc, please chime in.
But even then, I saw exactly what DeeF saw. I did notice a bit of a jump as she entered the room, just before the second instance. Perhaps that is how it got out ot sync. Or...
I'm on the phone with Maytag now, seeing if I can get a supervisor to intervene on behalf of a refrigerator that is just three months past the 60 month warranty. Maybe I should tell them I'm a Psycho with a Rope and they don't want to see me in a Frenzy... :) This was not how I wanted to spend...
Well, I threw in a quick update to Psycho extras, and hope to set up a squishy A/B comparison with the picture in picture function on my TV. That should allow me to compare Marnie, Psycho, and others directly (or at least, as directly as possible). And yes, I'll watch Shadow of a Doubt. Both...
The review for Vertigo is up, after much tweaking. (To my TV, to the review, to the formatting--you name it.)
Sounds like a good topic for discussion over on the Movies forum. I will say this--I did not buy all of the original releases of these movies because I thought they were too...
So far, region 2 has a separate 16x9 Psycho on the way. There is no word on a new Vertigo in any region (although before they do that, they really should consult with Robert Harris...). Look at it this way, though... if Psycho and Vertigo are released for $20 each, and you can get this box set...
(By the way, it's too soon to attach an official rating or recommendation without any meat to the review. But I'll tell you right now that, despite my dislike of the packaging, this is looking to be the set of the year.)
