Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Quick Change (1990) (Blu-ray)

The movie is objectively funny, but in a way that tends to elicit a smile from me rather than a guffaw. It's a fun time. "The laughing on the inside kind, I guess." 🤡

Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Quick Change (1990) (Blu-ray)

I like this film and have watched it several times, but I think it will retain its cult status. I don't find it "laugh-out-loud funny," but I appreciate how perfectly calibrated it is. This is also some prime Bill Murray.

    The COVID Vaccination Thread

The Pfizer news is encouraging. I hope we start seeing more studies of the Janssen vaccine too, especially if there are significant differences between viral vector and mRNA vaccines re: prevention of asymptomatic infection or protective duration.

While we weren't paying attention Playstation Plus has gotten badass

Although it's part of the March promotion, it was offered before the others (beginning of the month), so it might not be part of that group. Click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the store page and search for "Ratchet" - it came up as free for me when I wasn't signed in...

    The COVID Vaccination Thread

That's interesting to hear. My health care provider sent me materials beforehand that implied I would be receiving the 2-shot mRNA variety. And I would have happily received any of the approved vaccines when I showed up. It was just surprising getting the Janssen considering how organized they...

    The COVID Vaccination Thread

Am I the first person in this thread to receive the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine? I got it this weekend through a large, reputable, and well-organized HMO. It's clear they've begun serious rollout now. Most people who arrived for their appointment were surprised they weren't getting the...

While we weren't paying attention Playstation Plus has gotten badass

Just go into the PlayStation Store and look for a tile with the words "Play at Home" on it. If you still can't find it, go to the "Play at Home" page on the website. Just sign into your account and you should be able to claim them there.

What are you playing right now?

I respect (and overall like) Outer Wilds but really didn't find it to be a life-changing experience, or even the best game this year. It reminded me of that old game Damocles on the Amiga (down to the structure, design, and plot). It's impeccably crafted and has a beautiful sense of agency and...

    Retro gaming

Good call! I never had a PS3 or a Vita, but before the Wii Shop closed down, I picked up a bunch of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles that still haven't migrated anywhere else (and are now safely on my Wii U). My only regret is not picking up more of the Commodore 64 titles when they were still...

The Avengers - Crystal Dynamics, not the movie cast

I found the game in the PS5 section of the store, but when I selected it, the PS4 version of the game started downloading by default. I had to click a separate tile and claim a "$0" upgrade to start downloading the PS5 version. Definitely not intuitive.

The Avengers - Crystal Dynamics, not the movie cast

Yikes, that's terrible. Maybe I should wait to do this until they've ironed out the bugs.

    Memorable movie theatre moments

We had friends visiting from England who wanted to see Return of the Jedi. I'd already seen it, but was happy to go back for another viewing. Under the hot afternoon sun, we stood for hours in a line that went all the way around the building. The theater's interior was very large, with a 85 by...

2021 Oscar Nominations And Discussion Thread.

I saw depressingly few of the nominees this year. However, Sound of Metal was my favorite of the films I did catch, so I'm happy to see that nominated. Judas and the Black Messiah was very good too, especially its two main performances. Sentimentality will certainly be a bigger factor this year...

Announcing! The Puppetoon Movie Volume 3 Crowdfunder

I've just contributed to this wonderful preservation project. I've only recently discovered these collections. For anyone interested, there still appear to be some copies of the first (OOP) volume available from some major online retailers. And of course, Vol. 2 is still available through the...

What are you playing right now?

I've been playing (and enjoying) Loop Hero on the PC. It's only available on computers right now (PC, Mac, Linux). It has a deliberately late 1980s computer graphics style (CGA/EGA). It's very simple (you can play with just your mouse cursor) but it's a deeper than (for example) an idle...

Press Release SPHE Press Release: Last Action Hero (1993) (4k UHD)

Others in this thread have noted the pacing problems and tonal inconsistencies of Last Action Hero. The "action movie" portions of this movie wink too hard when they should be playing it straight (play it straight and you already have satire; watch the first Lethal Weapon for proof), and the...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection - in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I received my replacement Psycho discs today (BD and UHD), shipped via FedEx Ground (a signature was required). Basically only three weeks from the receipt of my request until the replacements arrived. I hope others who haven't had a good experience get their replacements processed soon. I've...

What's on your Daily Viewing List?

A few weeks ago I posted this in the wrong thread (television instead of film content), so I thought I'd post it in the correct one this time. I watched the Criterion Blu-ray of This Happy Breed (from the Noel Coward set). This is not a well-known David Lean film, and it certainly isn't...

    Justice League (2017)

Nope. I saw the discredited theory too, but the spoiler I read kiboshed it too. Honestly the discredited one would have had me more excited.

"Fry's Electronics" - what's going on with this store?

I know this is just another electronics retailer shutting down, but this really is kind of sad. The writing's been on the wall for a while now, with multiple locations closing down, but Fry's has been a huge part of tech culture in Silicon Valley for a long time. They had televisions, sound...

    Justice League (2017)

Articles were published this week that claim to have identified the "mystery hero." To say my mind was NOT blown would be an understatement. Maybe it's just for fans of the comics. (And the reports could be wrong or just clickbait.) If I were more familiar with (or invested in) the DC universe I...

    Justice League (2017)

I'm aware of that, but I've heard that plot developments (and characters) in those films will have implications for the Snyder cut. I'd like to be up to speed for the new version, but I'm not sure I want to sit through them if I don't have to.

    Justice League (2017)

I highly recommend this new Vanity Fair article about the making of Justice League. It's a compelling read. It doesn't necessarily blow the doors open on exactly what happened on the set after Snyder exited the production, but whatever happened, it wasn't good. Snyder is really hit or miss for...

    Starman (1984)

Carpenter is a brilliant B-movie director who got some A-movie budgets in the 80s. The Thing and Starman are astounding genre films and nearly flawless by any standard of filmmaking. Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, In the Mouth of Madness, They Live... all...

Hades: Polygon’s Game of the Year

Nor am I. I'm enjoying it, but I have to be in the mood for focused, frantic combat. I've only made it to the third area so far. It's great they offer a god mode for people who might otherwise be frustrated, but I haven't switched over to it yet. Maybe someday? I listened to some end-of-year...

Nintendo NX is now Switch (Official thread)

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. The joycons on my original (regular-sized) Switch lasted almost three years before the right one started drifting, and that was with frequent (though not intense) use. You can also buy a Switch Pro Controller and link it to your Switch Lite if you want to...

What did you watch this week in classic TV on DVD(or Blu)?

Earlier this week I watched the Criterion Blu-ray of This Happy Breed (from the Noel Coward set). This is not a well-known David Lean film, and it certainly isn't considered a classic on the scale of his masterpieces, but it's a wonderful example of the golden age "domestic epic" and the Lean...
