    New Line Cinema appreciation

What amazes me most about New Line is that they clearly go way out of there way to ensure that every bit of content of every one of their DVD's is presented w/the best quality possible (remastered, anamorphic, DD5.1, etc). I bet other studios (including sister company Warner Home Video) laugh at...

    New Line Cinema appreciation

New Line really does stand out from the rest of the pack. In addition to a guaranteed (more so than a THX certification too) top-notch transfer, some other things the separate New Line from all the other studios: Anamorphic everywhere -- not just trailers but *supplements* too. They spend the...

    New Secrets Progressive Scan Shootout!

The "really long cable" Y/C delay solution is legit. I got it from the infamous Guy Kuo way back when. Several others had to resort to it as well at the time. Steve

    New Secrets Progressive Scan Shootout!

AVIA has a Y/C Delay pattern that doesn't require any test equipment. But you would have to know for sure that your display has 0 Y/C delay error before concluding your DVD player has no Y/C delay problem. Steve

    New Secrets Progressive Scan Shootout!

Aha. There it is! One quick question though: is 480p considered an SD HDTV resolution? and DVD 480p then uses the HDTV SD YCbCr color matrix? OK, since there's no chance that I would ever see AVIA's red and green flashing color bar patterns through my HDTV STB to properly adjust the matrices...

    Toshiba geometry settings

Hey, Column O! I thought I recognized you. Good to see your still alive and kicking... there aren't many X81's still around anymore. Mine is still going strong and looking great. I too have a hard time imagining buying another set that didn't give me the same level of tweakability. I just...

Bass cancellation due to room modes?

You don't a mic. Just plug your RadioShack SPL meter into your soundcard and use a mic compensation file with the known RS SPL adjustments. Steve

Bass cancellation due to room modes?

Hey Chris. Nice site. Are you doing all that w/your soundmeter and Excel?? If so, you should take a look at SpectraLabs, so you can plug your sound meter into your computer for instanteous feedback on freq response changes. Steve

Bass cancellation due to room modes?

Here's something I've been wondering about regarding bass cancellation due to room modes: Say I measure some room nulls from my listening position. Are these only null from my listening position? ie. if I can't hear it, does that mean that my neighbors on top and below my apartment don't hear...

    Is SVHS-ET overrated?

OK, I just ordered a scratch & dent 7800 from Crutchfield for $169 so I'll find out if the white streaks are on the tape. I only use the VCR for time-shifting, so the worst possible scenario is some streaks in last week's Simpsons. It will be so nice not to see those damn streaks! Steve

Any Acurus AT-3ABM users out here?

I do find the internal click distracting. It's does seem really loud for a sound made w/o any moving parts. Hopefully, it's a little quieter in the Stage One. Please post your Outlaw comparison! Sounds like your not waiting around to trade in for the Stage One? Also, when did you send in your...

    Is SVHS-ET overrated?

Crap. That's the bulk eraser that I have, the Radio Shack one. But I wasn't really thinking straight before. For a minute, I got too excited that I might be able to get rid of those white streaks w/a bulk eraser, but later realized that I would get rid of my recordings as well... whoops...

Any Acurus AT-3ABM users out here?

Forgot to add: I like my ACT-3 a lot. I'll be doing the trade-in for the StageOne, but I'm in no hurry as the ACT-3 really sounds great, even today. Re the ABM: you have separate level settings for stereo, DD, and DTS, and separate bass mgmt for stereo vs. DD (see not below re DTS). There...

Any Acurus AT-3ABM users out here?

Are you sure you guys talking about the same "popping"? My ACT-3 has an audible "pop" when switching sources that I would describe more as an "audible click". It eminates from the ACT-3 itself, *not* through the speakers. AFAIK, it's a mechanical relay inside the unit switching paths. Blaine...

    Is SVHS-ET overrated?

I hadn't heard of bulk erasing s-vhs tapes before. I'm gonna try that. Rachael, What kind of charge gets on the tape? static charge? I think I recall from a previous thread that you know all about the white streak problem w/the old JVC's (one of which I still have -- HR-7300), Is this...

Is a Cleaning Disc safe for cleaning the DVD player's lens?

The danger is that the brush scratches the lens. Try blowing some compressed air in there first. The ReadRite all purpose duster is the best compress air I've found by far. It is significantly more powerful than everything else I tried and has the added bonus of being safe for optics and...

    Acurus power switch LED problems

I actually managed to break the green LED in my A200x3 when doing a little too aggressive cleaning inside it, but Mondial was nice enough to send me a couple replacements for free. It just slid on to the end of a bent wire. Is this the different design? Why would people need to send their whole...

Setting up my RP-91 and some operational questions

That -1 Contrast recommendation applies only to the interlaced outputs. Stacey didn't measure the progressive. Steve

    RP91 Copyguard?

Q: Sound and Vision Q&A. Correct info about VHS vs. SVHS?

When you say "analog channels" do you mean cable/air channels tuned in through the ANT IN coax? And by "digital channels" you mean DirectTV? Steve

    Humming in Power Amps!!

OK, I just re-read some of the various "audiophile" articles on reversing the AC polarity for a device and I think I see what I missed before: Filing down a cheater plug and using it w/a 2-pronged adapter be beneficial if it lowers the potential (grounding potential?) of the device's chassis...

    Humming in Power Amps!!

I'm talking about using this filed-down cheater with a two-prong powered device, not a 3-prong. Are you saying that using a cheater w/a two-pronged device is dangerous? I thought it just reversed the AC polarity or something like that but I don't really know exactly what reversing the polarity...

    Humming in Power Amps!!

Can I throw out this related question since it's obvious that all the gurus with answers are in this thread... What exactly is the effect of using a cheater plug (filed down) with a 2-prong power cable to reverse it's orientation? Can this have any effect on hum or is hum strictly a 3-pronged...

Looking for a convergence template for a 42h81

One of the problems w/using a grid w/line spacing as derived from the service manual is that your stuck w/5% overscan even though you can do better. Does this print shop make grids to custom specs? Steve

    B&K Ref 30 vs. Upgraded ACT-3

I'm in the same boat, and I am definitely attracted to the B&K Ref30 as well as the Anthem AVM-20. So your ruling out trading in your ACT-3 for a StageOne at $2500? That's less than a Ref30.
