Criterion Press Release: World of Wong Kar Wai (Blu-ray)

I found this thread on Twitter helpful in understanding the changes in the WKW set: . Sounds like the alterations were very much what the director and DP wanted, for better or worse. I won’t be buying the set because I’ve got the films I want on Blu, but even if I wanted the others it’d be a...

Press Release BVHE Press Release: Soul (4K UHD) (Blu-ray)

I think Up is the best movie Pixar has ever made - the first 5 minutes rightfully gets lauded but I think the rest of the film is criminally underrated for that reason - and have a particular fondness for the Docter oeuvre. I'd rate Soul as the second best of his entries, just ahead of Inside...

Criterion Press Release: Nightmare Alley (1947) (Blu-ray)

Cool that they got Kim Morgan to write the essay for this one, as I believe she co-wrote the screenplay for the new version of the film coming later this year with Guillermo Del Toro.

Criterion Press Release: World of Wong Kar Wai (Blu-ray)

Let's hope so, because egad, that greenish tint looks absolutely AWFUL. And it's not just the caps, as the text indicates that's how the transfer is encoded (even though Tooze talks himself into thinking it looks good, as he will). We know Criterion have gotten fast and loose with greenish...

    Pre-Order Psycho (1960) 60th Anniversary (4k UHD)

I emailed the same thing today and (yes, to their credit), got a response back. However, mine just repeated that they had "sent out the wrong disc and are working to correct the issue," with no indication that another one was being sent out. Not sure what's happening over there.

    The World of Wong Kar-wai

The answer to Criterion's refusal to release 4K discs seems fairly simple to me: Criterion is becoming a streaming company. They (rightly) see the end of physical media on the horizon and now view their physical product as supplementary to their streaming presence, and so they're likely just...

    Muppets C. Carol

Wonderful news. I’d effectively given up on ever getting to see this film complete again. Wonder if they’ll do a physical 4K release, or even just a standard blu in addition to the Disney+ version. I’d happily grab a new physical copy.

A Few Words About A few words about…™ Wonder Boys – in Blu-ray

Sorry (but not surprised) to hear this didn’t receive better treatment. Guess I’ll stick with my DVD and/or catch an Amazon Prime stream whenever the mood to revisit the film strikes me - which it often does, because it’s an absolute gem. It deserved better.

Pre-Order Wonder Boys (2000) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

It’s a tremendous movie, one I’ll stop and watch to the end any time I come across it on cable. A rare comedy made by adults for adults featuring adult characters you want to spend time with talking like adults and messing up their lives in truly adult ways. Incredibly funny, wise, sexy...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Best Years of Our Lives -- in Blu-ray

Wonder if this means Warner is gearing up for a re-release via Warner Archive. Or, God willing, maybe it’ll be a Criterion release. I believe there was a restoration that debuted a few years back at the TCM festival, so it’d be great to see that on Blu.

A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection - in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Late to the party, but anyone know the time frame for when the "correct" Psycho disc would be on store shelves? Would the incorrect one have been pulled? I'd like to buy the standalone Blu-ray, but it seems to make sense to wait until all the wrong versions have been removed from circulation.

PHE Press Release: Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Yeeeeeah this reeks of a desperate studio trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of one of its beloved franchises. Nothing wrong with that in principle but the movie’s not salvageable. I know it has its defenders. I am not one of them. As Siskel once said to Ebert regarding a missing reel of a...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ Airplane (Paramount Presents) – in Blu-ray

Critic Glenn Kenny had a good piece on the more "problematic" aspects of Airplane! last year that's worth a read: https://decider.com/2019/07/18/the-problematics-airplane-glenn-kenny/. It remains the funniest movie I've ever seen and the one that still makes me laugh harder than any other...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ Lawrence of Arabia - in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Apropos of nothing, this was the clue for Final Jeopardy during the finals of last week's Jeopardy Teachers Tournament. Not one of the respondents - all teachers - got it correct. Alex seemed offended. I was too.

Warner Archive Press Release: Romance on the High Seas (1948) (Blu-ray)

I remember watching and really enjoying this one on DVD back when the Doris Day box set came out. Probably not something I'd upgrade but glad to know it's getting a spit-shine.

A Few Words About A few words about…™ Days of Thunder — in 4k UHD Blu-ray

There was a time back when I was 11 or 12 that I must have watched Days of Thunder every day for a good year straight. Had the Game Boy game (which was awful) and the remote control Mellow Yellow car (which gave you a good 15 minutes until the batteries drained). Always preferred it to Top Gun.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tin Cup - in Blu-ray

Mine (pre-ordered back in March) finally shipped from Amazon over the weekend and is said to be arriving Friday. Not in a huge hurry as I don't know when I'll get to watch it, but glad to know it's finally coming :)

Stone-cold classic and a must-upgrade. Definitely getting this.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tin Cup - in Blu-ray

Great review, and excited to get this. It's way overlong, but it's got a lazy, meandering quality that I've always found really charming. And the cast has terrific chemistry, all centered around a hugely winning lead performance from Costner (always an underrated light comedian). Definitely...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I highly doubt anyone complaining about the "feminist agenda" in RoS or the new trilogy in general has any particular interest in a reasoned discussion about the politics of representation.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I expressed my opinion on Rise of Skywalker exactly once in this thread. And I'm "wasting my time" because I feel strongly about Star Wars and am disappointed the movie wasn't better. One can feel strongly about a film without liking it. Dissent is a good thing! Again, I saw lots of it in the...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I guess two technically counts as "multiple," but given that I was responding to an earlier post re: Jedi it felt in bounds. Also I hadn't realized that offering dissenting opinions on the film the thread is discussing isn't allowed. I saw lots of people doing it in the Parasite thread. Why is...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I’d put Jedi in the middle tier of “mostly watchable but not really very good” SW movies along with Sith, The Force Awakens, and Solo. Empire, New Hope and The Last Jedi are the only ones that I’d objectively call “good.” I’d add Rogue One if I’m being generous. Clones, Menace and Rise of...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Yeah, there are basically three good Star Wars movies. Maybe three and a half if you count the last 45 minutes of Rogue One.

Pre-Order Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker & The Skywalker Saga (4k UHD) (Blu-ray) Preorder List

Gotta let it go. Let new generations discover the films in whichever way they do. For an entire generation the prequels are their first exposure to Star Wars. To them they ARE Star Wars. That’ll be the same with the new trilogy as well and whatever comes next. There are generations who will look...

Pre-Order Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker & The Skywalker Saga (4k UHD) (Blu-ray) Preorder List

Depends. How much to you anticipate watching these films between now and Black Friday? If you're just going to watch a couple of them once each then have the set sit on your shelf for the next year or however long until you watch another one, wouldn't it be better to take the money you'd planned...

While we await the next Warner Archive Announcements...

There’s this weird misconception that Kino has the same level of control over the quality of their transfers as Warners do. They don’t. They’re a label, not a studio. They can only use what they’re given, which is why their extra effort to remaster films that come to them with problems - like...
