Are you sure that BD was derived from the same 4K scan as the 4K/UHD? Warner has been known to include Blu-rays that were previously released as Blu-rays with new 4K/UHD releases.
Please, can we stop the back and forth. You've made your points. Let's move on as we all agree that this movie will never have a reference disc like some other film titles because of the reasons stated in this thread numerous times. This is the best we'll see "Giant" on any home video format...
I’m sorry, but if you haven’t seen the Giant 4K/UHD then it’s end of story. Having an opinion is one thing, but I think having an informed opinion is more valuable to me.
In 2013, I bought this James Dean Blu-ray set from the UK and East of Eden plays fine on my Oppo 203 without me having to change regions here in Michigan.
Yes, we have to remember that Dean was only 24 years old when he filmed "Giant". He still had a lot to learn about his craft before his tragic young death.
I never said it didn’t make me uncomfortable back in the 1960’s, when I first watched the movie. However, I’m even more uncomfortable today because I realized we still have so much more work to do in that area.

RAH @Robert Harris could correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the film always had those dissolves issues which means the movie audiences in 1956/1957, were exposed to the same issues we are seeing today with those film sequences.
I wouldn't say I'm upset except to say the racism in the movie bothers me more today than when I first watched the movie back in the 1960's, when I was a young teenager.
It's inherent to the original film elements used by George Stevens and how he filmed the movie. It's the best we'll ever see with this particular movie. If you watched the Blu-ray or seen the movie on DVD or TV, the 4K disc improvements would be much more recognizable to you.
That HBO Max stream is derived from the old scan used for the prior Blu-ray. This morning, I watched in it's entirety, my iTunes digital that upgraded from HD to 4K/Dolby Vision. It looks much better than the Blu-ray. My 4K disc has shipped from Amazon so I'll be watching this fine movie...
