The Axiom Audio LFR-1100 Active Loudspeaker System: How I learned to stop reviewing speakers and start reviewing the source quality.
I have been an audio nut since summer of 1977, when I purchased a JVC 35 WPC receiver, a pair of Electro Voice EV-16B speakers (a 12 inch sealed design that was...
John - The Stellar Monoblocks are an outstanding amplifier. Writing about amps isn't easy, if one has done a lot of comparisons under blind conditions. An amp shouldn't have a sound of its own. It merely should handle all the duties of delivering current to one's speakers with no audible...
Below is the summary of the review of the Ohm SSC-4900's in 2018. The PS Audio amps did an excellent job driving the Ohm speakers.
Greetings all - I recently ordered a pair of Ohm Super Sound Cylinder speakers, or SSC-4900’s. They are in the middle of the Ohm Walsh lineup, and are about 38...
John - I did it the old fashioned way: I bought everything. The Axioms are matched with 10 channels of their own ADA-1500-5 amps (one per speaker) in our high end room. The Maggies/Akitika system is in a smaller room (about 15 x 18). The PS Audio rig is in a third system with another American...
Greetings guys ... The last 6 months have been extremely intense for my "day job," which is in auto finance and the pair of dealerships into which I invested in 2017. The dealerships have kept me extremely busy with some serious issues - which started before the Coronavirus hit. As I type, here...
Today is a much appreciated day of relaxing. One of the aspects of the LFR-1100 actives is how versatile they are.
Earlier today, I fired up the SACD of Roger Water's "In The Flesh." The stage was immense, the bass deep, the performers well placed and detail incredible. For example, the grunge...
Ok - We are about a month into the review process. Time is a bit difficult with a daughter's wedding coming up in 7 days, plus some busy times at work. These speakers are spectacular - they take everything Dale Rasco reported 4 years ago and expand on it. The increase in dynamics when one has a...
John - You aren't missing much. The listening to it last night was an effort to find out how revealing the Active LFR-1100's are. And, as mentioned, they are ruthless. All the flaws in DSOTM are made crystal clear. The biggest surprise is just HOW revealing these speakers are.
Just finished the SACD of Dark Side of the Moon. These speakers are ruthless - they reveal just how old this recording is. In contrast to the Masters of Acoustic guitar, Dark Side lacks the depth and purity in the recording.
And that brings me to a new level in reviewing: This is the first pair...
Ok - The speakers are set up and the initial process of listening tests has started. Look for some pictures this weekend. The system now is an OPPO universal player, the Marantz 7703 pre-amp and the Axiom LFR-1100 actives. No processing is being used, and they are running full range.
Tonight...
The system arrived safely, and is hooked up and burning in. It's a complicated setup with the two DSP boxes plus 10 channels of amplification. Look for some initial listening tests tomorrow night.
Everything is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Here is the set up for a pre-amp/DSP/Poweramp/speaker set up.
Two channel output - one into each DSP unit which controls left and right speakers.
From each DSP - 5 pre-amp outputs to each of 5 main amp inputs. The DSP is custom to each driver set: One...
Here are some random thoughts about these speakers before they arrive. My favorite speakers are the passive LFR-1100's and the Ohm SSC-4900. Other speakers that have been here include the Legacy Signature SE, Klipsch LaScalas, Infinity IRS Sigma, Onix Ref 3, Ascend Sierra, B&W 805 and Salk...
It appears the LFR-1100 actives will ship next week. The speakers have been done, but after a conversation with the design team in July, they decided to add a subwoofer output on the DSP box. This is a big deal in a 2 channel system.
Time for a quick update - The LRS are an interesting speaker. If one looks at the Stereophile response curve for these speakers, one will see a pretty wide curve. It's quite noticeable with the human voice. I was watching "Cinderella Man", and when Mrs. Maddock (Renee Zwelliger) is speaking...
A quick update - I managed to get an hour with the Maggie LRS last evening. The disc was the SACD of Roger Water's "In The Flesh." The LRS did a great job of presenting the large soundstage and the imaging of the performers. Waters is front and center - the band and sound effects nicely to the...
The LRS arrived safely last evening. I did manage to get them into the system and did a quick listen. By quick, I mean 5 minutes. Our daughter is leaving for university today, and things are pretty hectic. I will try to get some pics over the weekend - and can say this: I cannot imagine more...
Hi guys - The Magnepan LRS speakers have shipped - so a little less than 3 months from the order date. There never was any communication regarding keeping me updated, but they also didn't charge my card until today. They have also been swamped with requests, so I can't see anything about which...
It was just the peak output available from the 2 1500's. In reality, I will never be taxing the speakers nor the amp. The 4500 peak output from the 1500, and with this system having 2, I just couldn't resist posting the 9000 watt figure.
The speakers are getting close to being done! Here is...
These speakers are going to make winter more tolerable. I already have the passive LFR-1100's - they will be the rear speakers in the system. It will be interesting to discover the differences when removing the passive crossover and supplying a total of 9000 watts to the speakers.
Here is a pic of the LFR-1100's that I have on order in the paint booth. The finish is Oak with a cinnamon accent. The Speakers stand 47.5 inches tall.
