I found the plot of Flaxy Martin just too weak to sustain my interest. It's a shame because there was a good cast and the potential was there for a better film. My wife liked it a bit more than I did.
We both loved it. There's a Hitchcockian touch to it that we really appreciated. There was one plot element that seemed poorly thought out to me, and it detracted a bit from the story but only a bit.
Agreed on Thieves' Highway. It is excellent. The ending is a bit forced, but even so there's an ironic quality to the cop's lecture since the police had been no help to Nick's father.
Fleming's character being at the trial doesn't bother me too much. There were ways that could have been explained if the film had dug a little deeper into the relationship between Fleming and Cotton. But I can't get past her actions at the end of the movie -- they simply do not make sense. I...
That was my feeling as well. The opening was a bit much and I would have liked a little more suspense along the way, but it turned out to be a decent thriller.
We watched Native Son last night. It's not a very good movie, but it certainly is an interesting movie. One wonders what might have been if the film with more or better resources. I'm glad I had the chance to see it at least once. I really appreciate the variety of films aired on Noir Alley,
We watched The Killer That Stalked New York yesterday afternoon and had a similar reaction to some mentioned here. It's worth watching once and it is certainly relevant to what we are living through right now. But the story itself is weak and we're not likely to watch it again. It's too bad...
We watched The Strange Affair of Uncle Harry last night. As mentioned already, a major plot hole was that the option of leaving the sisters in the family home while Harry and Deborah move out was never explored. Even a quick dismissal would have helped — as they did when the possibility of all...
I want to thank you for the original post alerting me to that airing of four pre-code films. I would have missed it otherwise.
Baby Face is a favorite and I was happy to watch it again. I'd never seen Two Seconds before. That was incredibly powerful. Employee's Entrance and Blessed Event...
We watched A Man Called Adam last night and both of us liked it a lot. There's a powerful and still relevant message there about race relations along with some terrific music. I did think the film was too set-bound and would have benefited by giving the audience a better sense of place...
I watched The Underworld Story a few months ago and intended it watch it again this afternoon. I did catch Eddie's commentary before and after, but I slept through most of the movie. That says more about me than it does about the film. My wife stayed awake and said she liked it more than the...
I think some of those actions would have made more sense if the film played up his obvious PTSD a bit more. I get why they might not have wanted to do that in 1945, but that was what I found lacking when trying to sympathize with the character.
I'll go along with the consensus on Wicked Woman. It was a fun, campy movie. I won't be seeking it out, but if it pops up again in a few years I might watch it. I certainly enjoyed it more than Beyond a Reasonable Doubt which we also watched yesterday. I just couldn't accept the fundamental...
We both really enjoyed Try and Get Me. The ending was powerful, but it was Howard Tyler's tragic story that propelled the story forward. It's a fine film.
I enjoyed The Captive City well enough. It's an entertaining film but certainly not a great one. It did remind me of The Phenix City Story in terms of the subject matter, but Phenix has an intensity that Captive City is lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed Criss Cross and I've added the blu-ray to my wish list. We'd just recently watched The Woman in the Window, and it was interesting to compare the endings of the two films.
I liked Berlin Express well enough, but add me to the list that thought there was too much narration. It's a fun story, though, and the shots among the ruins were impressive.
