They can not ban OTA antennas. See http://www.fcc.gov/csb/facts/otard.html . It looks like all the OTA DTV stations in LA are in the UHF band.

I do not know if the Sony DTiVo uses the standard Sony DTV IR codes, but you can not control a Hughes or Philips DTiVo with a standalone TiVo. BTW the DTiVo rules.

I am pretty sure the DirecTiVo (an APG box) will only allow you to add stations DTV carries. All the HDTV boxes have OTA tuners (HDTV and NTSC) and will allow you watch an antenna feed. Do the APG HDTV boxes really carry guide data all the OTA stations for an area that DirecTV doesn't offer...
