Both Fanny & Irma La Douce had their scores jettisoned. Musicals had become poor risks for theatrical films. Each of these musicals would be ripe for Broadway revival productions. However, melodies from the songs were used as background scores.
Finally have received all 3 films. Unfortunately, I’m in Florida for the winter and won’t be able to watch them till the end of April. I’m most looking forward to the extended version of The Abyss. I haven’t seen it since the laserdisc (or was it the DVD?) They showed it on some cable channel...
In the early 60’s both The Robe and Demetrius were re-released in a double bill. In those days most neighborhood theatres played 2 features. They did the same thing with Peyton Place & Return to Peyton Place.
I was disappointed that they are only releasing a blu-ray here in the states. Maybe a 4K will come later. This is one film that would definitely benefit by UHD due to the wonderfdul production design.
It almost came out at one point and then was withdrawn. However, the wonderful Jerome Kern soundtrack score was released on a CD. Great songs: Up with the Lark, In Love in Vain, All Through the Day (I Dream about the Night)), Centennail (opening). Great sounding with the wonderfully rich 20th...
I bought all the Disney Treasure tins on DVD. The picture quality was remarkably good for DVD. They also released other titles on DVD in similar sets: the complete True Life Adventures Shorts and feature films (The Living Desert, Vanishing Prairie, African Lion,etc.). Again, the picture quality...
I have 2 Pioneer players, both play 2 sides. I have very many LDs but wouldn’t know how to get rid of them. I would only keep the deluxe boxed sets:like the Star Wars trilogy and the terrific Disney boxed sets. The Disneys have some terrific extras not available elsewhere. The Snow White box...
There is a terrific book relating the restoration of almost all of the 1954 A Star is Born. Theatres complained of 3 hour length. They wanted to get an extra showing each day so WB made some cuts including a song. After searching most of lost footage was discovered including the song. There was...
The 10 discs I would like on blu-ray, in no special order:
1. The Story of Ruth
2. The Man in the Iron Mask (Louis Hayward, dir. Jas. Whale)
3. Three Little Words
4. Royal Wedding
5. Around the World in 80 Days
6. Raintree County
7. The Alamo
8. Barabbas
9. Amadeus (extended version)
10...
Paul Robeson & Hattie McDaniels duet is a highlight. The added song is a perfect addition to the score, not in the original. It was recorded on the complete recording of Show Boat on the Angel label in the Appendix CD (It Still Suits Me). Too bad it wasn’t in the 1950 version or in recent...
I received my replacement disc today. Listened to the whole corrected Disc 4. There are a couple of tracks with Christopher Plummer‘s own voice. I really think they could have used them in the film. Just my opinion.
Just watched the Warner Archives Madame Bovary. I am so behind in watching discs that are still in their original wrapping. Bovary has one of my favorite Rozsa scores. The waltz is the film’s highlight! Jennifer Jones dancing to Rozsa’s impressive Madame Bovary Waltz sweeps you away as it did...
I also saw it at RCMH in its premiere run. Musicals are my favorite genre. I was not impressed. I think it got too much hype before it opened. I felt the same about
La La Land. However, I found the latter much more entertaining including much better score.
Looking forward to all of the 4K UHD discs, especially The Abyss. I missed the theatrical showing last week. Wish they would show it in theatres again. I would be very disappointed if the extended version is not on the UHD disc.
I watched the Titanic UHD 4K in 2 parts over the last couple of days. I think it has aged well. Picture quality is excellent. I’ve never watched the film with the commentary. I think I’ll try it soon. I did watch half of the hours worth of deleted scenes. Many might have been worthwhile in an...
White Christmas should look wonderful on 4K UHD since it was filmed in VistaVision. I believe it was the first film in that process. The film ran horizontally through the camera exposing more than twice the film area as usual 35mm with no anamorphic squeeze.
Even the blu-ray looks quite good. I...
I watched my annual viewing of the Alistair Sim version of the Dickens classic a couple of nights ago. It only gets better. My favorite scene isn’t even in the book: Scrooge goes to eat his dinner at a local inn and asks for more bread. The waiter says “That’ll be a ha’penny extra, sir”. Scrooge...
I wasn’t able to go to a showing last night. I do have the extended version on disc, but definitely not at the quality it must have been on the big screen. I’m hoping they show it again in theatres before the 4K UHD release in the spring. Any word on a repeat showing?
I received mine a couple of days ago. Same problem: disc 4 duplicates disc 2. The set is amazing. Enjoyed every minute. So disappointed. How do we get the right disc replacement?
Totally not Halloween related:
Watched Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain from the new UHD 5 film set. Transfer looks great. I don’t think I’ve seen this since I watched it from the blu-ray box set. Of course, the wonderful set piece is the killing of Gromek in the farmhouse kitchen. Hitchcock said he...
