Given the frequency of the news getting jammed down the world's throat today, I think that it will be largely forgotten by most people by February so taking it out of the movie seems unnecessary to me too.

Given Sony's track record with the Spidey spinoffs, I can't imagine that's going to help rehabilitate Marvel's reputation. The general public just sees the Marvel logo and doesn't know that one is Sony and the other is Marvel proper.
