"Vivian's First Funeral" is also my favorite of the entire series.
I'm not big on the musical eps either, mainly because it just seems odd for this particular series. Almost like they were done just because Bea was a musical comedy performer, as were others in the cast, not because they fit...
My favorites from each season match Kasey's in a several cases, but I have a few ties that I just can't break:
S1: Maude Meets Florida
Maude's Dilemma, Part 1 (Yes, I actually like this episode NOT for political reasons and find it VERY funny.)
S2: Maude's Facelift, Part 1
The...
I had completely forgotten about that sketch, but Isabel's line about her name being New Jersey brought it all back. LOL. I haven't seen that since it first aired.
Speaking of hilarious, non-issue episodes ( ;) ), I just rewatched "Viv's First Funeral." That never fails to crack me up. So many great lines and pitch perfect performances.
While I agree that most issue-oriented sitcoms and/or episodes don't hold up as well, one thing I noticed about All In The Family and Maude is that aside from the issues, they were genuinely funny and featured spectacular acting, the depth of which isn't really seen that much in sitcoms, before...
I disagree. I finished the entire series and couldn't believe how much I laughed. Plus, the character of Maude was CONSTANTLY being made fun of. As Lear said, she was " a horse's ass liberal" who was always removed from the basis of her beliefs. Characters were always calling her on it...
I disagree here. The episode was never about abortion. It featured a character who ultimately decided to have an abortion, no more, no less. I think this was one time when Lear got it exactly right. Instead of being about the issue, the issue was realistically woven into a human and...
While I agree it's a relatively tame episode, just tackling the subject matter on TV at all in 1972 was revolutionary. Especially in a comedy. In fact, it's still one of the very few, if not only, sitcoms to ever deal with abortion even to this day. I certainly can't recall any other sitcom...
But that aspect of the Maude episode is in the script. Those objections would have been raised at that point in production, or in run through or on taping night if it came from the performances. And it's the same in the remake. So it still doesn't explain the expense of completely redoing the...
True. There would be no reason to go to the great expense of redoing the episode, when practically nothing changed from one version to the other. If and when the sponsors came around, why not just air the already completed one? Plus, All in the Family had already done a much "racier" (and...
My exact take, as well, down to the reaction to Channing chatting up Carol. I think the energy was way off on both first attempts. I truly doubt censors played any part in the events. The first two tries simply did not work as well as they should have.
I am simply LOVING revisiting this...
Started with the bonus disc, then on to Season 2. I think the 1st part of Maude's Facelift is absolutely marvelous. The writing, directing and acting are top notch each moment of the ep. Shame the 2nd part is such a terrible comedown, imo. Man, I am going to love revisiting this series.
I've ordered from Shout! before (Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman), but this the first time I've pre-ordered. I'm wondering the same thing. I can't wait to receive my copy. They say a month early, so that should be around the 17th.
