I have to admit "The Flying Saucer" episode is one of my least favorites and IMO one of the worst of the series ("Captain Hero" takes the Worst Episode award) but you guys have good choices otherwise, Dave and John.
I love all of these--brilliant comedy in all of them!
"Maude's Facelift Part...
It's my favorite show ever but I agree that the final season was its' weakest. It's harder for me to pick 10 outstanding episodes from that season more than any other; most are merely average, a couple are stinkers and only a couple are excellent ("Maude's Guilt Trip", "The Gay Bar" and perhaps...
I agree Macy was awesome and a great match for Bea to play off. Playing the straight man to Maude was a formidable challenge for any actor, but Bill was perfect for the role and so underrated. His timing, though not as razor-sharp as Bea's, was as good as it gets.
Well, I've made my way through the entire set and am backtracking and watching some episodes again. I am curious to know which are your favorite episodes from each season. Here are mine:
S1: Maude Meets Florida
S2: The Tax Audit
S3: Vivian's Party
S4: Poor Albert
S5: The Game Show
S6...
I watched the Captain Hero episode last night and it's as bad as I remember. Though I get what the writers were trying to do with this story, it just did NOT translate well to the set/screen. I used to blame John Byner for this stinker of an episode, but he was only doing what he was hired to...
Yes, Shout did an incredible job on the music. As a diehard MAUDE fan (it's my favorite show ever) even I had forgotten some of the little bits of music that were on some of my less-than-favorite episodes ("Tie a Yellow Ribbon" for example). It was well worth the wait, and to think that five...
The bad press through the decades about how MAUDE is terribly topical and dated comes from Conservative reviewers who can't separate the character's political beliefs from the series itself. I've read about a dozen reviews now from established writers who had nothing but praise for the show...
The haters who always criticize MAUDE for its' topicality and datedness have probably only seen the abortion episode and a few others from the first two seasons. This show had plenty of non-issue episodes that make me laugh more than "I Love Lucy" no matter how many times I've seen them. "The...
Some people should stick to threads where they can constantly bemoan the fact that black-and-white one-season clunkers like Pete & Gladys or those boring, long-lost 1950s/60s dramas that nobody cares about are not on DVD instead of thread-crapping here.
The "Double Standard" episode was much better in its' final version with Fred Grandy as Chris. The whole 'charades' sequence is one of my favorite moments of the entire series yet it seemed kind of 'off' in the unaired version because it was almost as if the audience got the joke too soon and...
I watched both versions of "Maude's [Arthur's] New Friends" back-to-back and I must say they were right to reshoot the episode. It was okay with Gene Saks but much funnier with James Coco. His naughty playfulness worked better for the comedy. I also preferred Helen Page Camp because Elizabeth...
I always thought that the pacing was also off in the abortion episode. Though it's probably the most famous installment, it's not one of my favorites. I really think the chicken-choking (sorry) incident is out-of-place and is not one bit amusing as the writers intended.
Thanks for confirming those Brian. I forgot to ask about "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" from "The Tax Audit" episode. If that's there, then I can live with any other music omissions, but it sounds like Shout got everything cleared, which is awesome since this is my Favorite Show Ever!
I am still waiting for mine---damn customs!
Can anyone confirm if the [instrumental version of] Josie and the Pussycats theme is heard in "Maude's Facelift Pt 2"? It's in the scene where Walter and Philip are sitting on the bed watching cartoons.
Also in "Walter's Ethics", Carol hums a few...
I am glad to hear this episode is complete because "Fever" was my favorite musical number in this. Still hoping my set arrives tomorrow because it's a long weekend here and I am dying to dig in.
I already have a list compiled for the all musical episodes so those will be the first ones I watch the make sure everything is there. I will post the results here and at SitcomsOnline.
I preordered The Facts of Life and it came mid-December [a month early] as promised. I expect my Maude set to be here late this week or early next week.
Well even the worst Maude episode has something worthwhile IMO, and the Washington eps had "If you need anything through the night, you just call for ME!"...."Open your mouth Walter!"
The first script was Maude freaking out when she learned Carol's boyfriend was going to spend the night in Carol's room; the second was Maude meeting a couple of swingers. Both of the aired versions are among my favorite episodes.
Perhaps there were early versions that CBS censors would not approve and those are the ones we will be getting. Either way, I am grateful for some decent bonuses. Can't wait til February!
