I had a velodyne 1215 for a few years back in the day. 12" front firing with a 15" down-firing passive radiator. It was a pretty nice little sub at the time. I went through a ton more after that including making a few, but that was a nice one for what it was.
I wouldn't give up front projection as I actually like the ability to have a little softer image to compare to the theater experience, but if it had a mode for higher res events like sports, all the better. I dont want my movies to look like tv. But I've spent a lot more of my life working on...
I'm relying on better advice than mine, since I came to this with the old opinion that ported was still better for HT generally, but I have been disabused of that notion thankfully, so I better understand that is a misconception. A common misconception, but a misconception none the less. If...
Louder crap is still crap. ;)
It makes sense that in the past it might have been needed for HT subs to rely on ports to overcome material and design limitations that held all but the best sealed subs from generating the raw power and air movement that people were looking for in an HT...
Well now, baffles are a whole other conversation. ;)
Its been very educational for me and given me a lot to think about as I catch back up on the state of the hobby. The research is half the fun.
Just some brief checks, but it looks like REL is a line with no ported subs. They do have some active/passives, but I don't see any ports. Maybe the 1510 Predator would be a good candidate. I'll keep digging, but that looks like a good alternative at this point.
If people want ported sub because they are misinformed like I was, then I would love for a company to help educate rather than feeding into that to make a buck. We aren't talking about 200 dollar sub here, so these companies are doing a disservice imo even if they are doing it based on customer...
Johns statement that its no longer the case that ported is better for HT even without considering music is convincing. That being the case, there really isn't much of a use case for ported since that used to be the big use case. Now that sealed is better for both, anyone pushing ported is...
If its just brainwashing that leads people to believe that there as valid use cases for a ported aub these days, I dont love companies continuing to lean into that lie.
Its unfortunate that those narratives and distortions still run wild. But thats the value of a community like this that can...
There has never been a shortage of snake oil salesmen in the home theater world, bit back in the day Hsu and SVS used to be trusted names. Its just sad to see them slip. I've got a lot to relearn about how things and companies have changed. Ill keep researching and trying to find reputable...
Do you know a sub manufacturer that knows enough about subs that they don't make ported versions? I'm concerned that both hsu and svs are taking advantage of people with inferior products. There has to be someone out there that only makes quality gear. I dont want to support companies that...
Yeah. I've never owned anything good, but I chalk that up in part to never having anyone to tell me what my preferences are and to correct me when i have the wrong ones. I know now that what I think of as preferences are just my own stupidity and that preferences is just another word for...
Price isn't a primary concern, so I'm not looking at price for price. Just looking for what I want to get out of it. I've had ported and sealed and active passive in the past and I did like ported better for movies so thats my lean for sure. Still exploring but id guess ill end up between the...
Yeah. My priority is pants leg flapping LFE in movies, and ports have always gotten me there better. Being designed to plug the ports can tighten it up for music listening, so it's a nice option. Agree that it will never be as tight as a sealed sub, but with my uses, I think ports will get me...
Luckily, they are a bit older now, so it's pretty safe and the room is dedicated with no reason for anyone to be up near the front soundstage, so they are pretty safe. I did have to deal with all of that years ago when I had my old set up. It's very nice to not have to worry about that too...
A buddy of mine that sells gear got me a steal on a pair of the debut F6.2s and the Debut 6.2 center. I have them up and running now and they sound great. I'm very happy with them for the cost for sure. I'm going to add 4 or the wall mount debut speakers for surrounds and atmos ceiling...
It's doing less well than you might think internationally as well, but better for sure. And it's not doing what was expected in terms of conversion to platform either. It did well when it dropped for a bit, but as word of mouth spread about the quality of the show, the number of people...
Keep in mind too, that a lot of the decisions that Max is making right now is about what Max needs and not what the consumer needs unfortunately. Making a cross platform app is certainly one excellent thing they get out of it (for them) but they are also able to have deeper instrumentation...
yeah. there can be a bit of an echo chamber at Prime Video right now, so how they look at forecasting and performance can be a little skewed. I think it will take one or two more projects like Rings and this one to make them finally make a shift. The question will be what the learn from it...
Amazon is really struggling with this one. They were expecting a lot more and the buzz and viewership hasn't been great. After Rings of Power, they are pretty touchy about this stuff. I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes it if does keep a second season.
Thanks. I didn't even notice that the mid and tweeter in that model were coincident. That looks great. But I'm surprised that the uni-fi doesn't use the 6.25 woofers like the debut since it has the bridging 4 to cover any gaps. I know that in the past I have been partial to 6s as a good size...
I just want to steer away from 50% more money getting 5% better sound. That break point is what I'm looking for. I probably wouldn't want to go much above 5k for the front 3 without having an excellent reason to do so, but id be happy to find something that costs less that gets the job done.
I had some svs subs way back when that i really liked, but I dont know much about their speakers. Ill check them out.
Kef was always a little fatiguing to me, but my taste may have changed.
I dont know anything about the monoprice speakers, so ill check them out as well.
Thanks!
I've heard good things about the elac line, but I haven't been able to hear them yet. Ill try and find a set to check out.
The c6s we not pricy, but they were kind of a sweet spot for me for home theater with a sub and a center doing a lot of the work. That was a long time ago, so I need to...
