Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

The 2013 BD is included. I don't think there has be a Rebel Without a Cause remastered (2023) BD.

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

In the case of Kino, I was always told that the inclusion of a remastered BD or not was mostly down to whether KL had the rights or not (eg Silence of the Lambs and Paths of Glory).

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

I'm including indie labels (and I'm in France, which is kind of a different market) in the discussion, which is why I'm seeing things as still coexisting today. From a company perspective, it might be a different discussion because the bottom line's objective aren't the same, but from a...

Dual Format. Sorry for that, I thought I used it in full at least once. Of course it is, other elements can drive different positive cost-related interests (doing one 4K/BD release instead of 2 separate releases, retaining extras without increased authoring costs, possibly creating a future UHD...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Well, it is what it is. One can discuss at length about that, the fact is that it's DF that was said to supposedly help future proofing purchases and thus push the newer formats, but didn't work for BD and certainly not UHD (and the inclusion of older BDs in plenty of DFs isn't helping). So if...

It certainly cuts money, but the push for the adoption remains to be demonstrated in anything more than a marginal way, being by offering dual format releases or not doing so. DF-or-not-DF didn't work for BD, and UHD is doing even worse.

Ideally, I'd suppose both should be retained since geometrically, you either have both right or both wrong. If the AR is the right one but the content isn't, then either the picture can be zoomed in/out or geometrically distorded or not properly centered, or... And if the content is about fine...

Thanks for the detail with your 1st point, I think that's what I wasn't sure. We agree on the second one. :)

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

(I supposed it was for me, then) Since others already either rent or bought it, why would I ask them to do another purchase of it ? I'm just curious about the updated stream, as it'll most likely be an indicator of the upcoming physical release, which is what I'm interested into ultimately...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

A AR can be kept and the framing being very different anyway, and the difference between 1.78 and 1.85 is negligible, so it's indeed, in the end, a very limited issue in practice. However, hat do you mean by "hardly ever been seen at 1.85" ? That this exact ratio isn't always respected in...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Is this post for me ? If so : I've never rented anything digital. I have 0 interest in anything (S)VOD, even less so through renting only. Furthermore, if other people already bit the bullet, I'm pretty certain it's quite fine, and even an added value for this board, for them to provide this...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Is it different also outside of the color grading ? A massive issue of the 2020 release is that it also was smoothed to oblivion. If they at least fixed the grading and the framing, part of the fixes are done, but if it's still smooth like a baby's butt, it'd mean a non-negligible issue hasn't...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Absolutely, and for various reasons. Even those with more critical eyes aren't all sensitive to the same things. Flickering and wobbling strain my eyes quite quickly, but somebody else will have a different sensitivity. In the past, I myself used to believe that people with high end equipment...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

My experience is that physical market is a niche, and discerning enthusiasts a niche within it. That's how you'll find people with high end equipment praising things like Terminator 2's 4k restoration or American Graffiti's one. So what Robert writes about this is absolutely true. Some people...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Sorry if I misread this part of your post. Quite often, "purist" is used as a way to dismiss some people as never-happy nitpicky party-poopers, and that's how I read it, ie it's not the less discerning people that may have too low of a bar, but the “purists” having theirs too high. More...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Well, yes : those who don't care or don't know better, whatever the reasons are, don't care or don't know better. Which is fine, because that's what more discerning people are for, and I'd suppose it's this public that labels/studios should target (and that plenty of labels are already...

Press Release Paramount Presents! Press Release: To Catch a Thief (1955) (4k UHD)

Oh yeah, it's definitely a question of what has been done digitally after the scan. I doubt the scan is to blame, and for all that matters, they probably could go back to the raw scan and redo everything done afterwards (which, IIRC, is what Arrow did for the Bruce Lee movies, for instance). I...

On the other hand, would they be willing to shelf out money so soon after financing a brand new 6K/4K resto from the VV OCN, especially when the sanitary cordon around it wasn't entirely tight ? It's kind of a lose-lose situation for them anyway : either they'll use their latest crappy...
