Pre-Order Zodiac (2007) (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

The Viper was notable for being able to capture uncompressed 10-bit 4:4:4, so the original capture could theoretically support a true HDR grade if the assets were preserved. I'm speculating here, but it's possible the raw assets were only preserved for the theatrical cut, which could explain...

    Pre-Order WHV Press Release: Challengers (2024) (Blu-ray)

Amazon apparently didn't even get enough stock to fulfill my day one pre-order and couldn't provide an estimated ship date. Fortunately, Gruv still had some stock and shipped a copy out immediately.

I suspect any domestic re-pressing decisions are on hold while Disney transitions it home video operations to Sony. Most of the Disney titles in my Amazon wish list have been out of stock for several months now.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

I spent about 45 minutes switching between the UHD's HDR10 to the Dolby Vision presentations over the last few nights. In brief, the visible compression differences were insignificant. The average extra ~9 mbps FEL stream alleviates some compression artifacts in the HDR10 base layer, but I...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

I plan on doing a visual comparison next weekend after my FEL-capable player arrives. A BDInfo comparison of the data rates for the base layer and FEL suggests the FEL may be doing a lot of heavy lifting here. When the base layer bitrate drops, the FEL rate goes up and often hits 20+ mbps...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - One from the Heart - Reprise -- in 4k UHD

This is a great interview. I also appreciate the new, separated forensic/NSD ratings. Thank you! The film has a reputation as a folly, and I sympathize with many of the common criticisms, but it's a fascinating, gorgeous aesthetic experiment. I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching it.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

I finally watched this release last night. My thoughts: The master is incredible, and the release is by far the best I’ve ever seen the film look. I also think it looks better than Kino's releases of the Dollars Trilogy, mostly due to the color grading. I disagree with reviews suggesting...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - High Noon -- in 4k UHD

It's hard to get into without violating the forum's rules against political discussions. Suffice to say, High Noon was widely viewed at the time as an allegory for Hollywood's response to the McCarthy hearings. Wayne was a vocal anti-communist, and he viewed it as communist propaganda. Hawks...

    Pre-Order WHV Press Release: Challengers (2024) (Blu-ray)

Insert obligatory "Wish this were release on UHD" gripe here. With that out of the way, this is also my favorite film of the year so far, and it would have made my top 3 last year if the strikes had not delayed its release. Best finale to a film in years, and the score has been in steady...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

This is the real issue. There are lousy looking discs with 80 mbps encodes and great looking discs with 35 mbps encodes. Heck, I’ve seen 25 mbps streams that look great from a normal seating distance, and there are many on this forum who loudly proclaim that streaming bit rates are...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Just wanted to report a disappointing experience with Kino Customer Service here. As noted in the Once Upon a Time in the West thread, I received a defective copy of Kino's release of For a Few Dollars More. There appears to be an issue with the third data layer that cannot be washed or...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

Back to the dual vs triple layer discussion, I wonder if there’s any publicly available data on the yield and return rates for each type of disc. Anecdotally, I’ve had to return/exchange several triple layer discs in the past 24 months due to pressing issues at the layer change. I’ve actually...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Once Upon a Time in the West -- in 4k UHD

100GB discs have their own problems with QC, and a 46 mbps encode is more than sufficient for my screen size and seating distance. I'm not going to let bitrate FOMO spoil my enjoyment of this release.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Abyss -- in 4k UHD

It's a true HDR grade, albeit a very restrained one in the highlights. The metadata shows the disc has a peak light level of 800 nits, but the peak frame average light level is only 44 nits. None of the Cameron/Park Road UHDs really take advantage of HDR highlights at all. It's the least...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Departed -- in 4k UHD

American Cinematographer would be the most reliable resource for details on the cinematography and original 2K DI process. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription with access to their article on The Departed. I highly doubt a new scan of the OCN or any film-out was done for this release...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Departed -- in 4k UHD

I’m watching it now. I suspect it’s a 4K upscale of the 2K DI with a new, richer grade. Regardless of the heritage, it looks significantly better than the Blu-ray.

What's left, unreleased on 4k, that you would pay $50 to own on day one?

For $50, on day 1, there's not a lot. I recently pre-ordered Stop Making Sense for ~$70, but I was only willing to pay that because it's a favorite film with a passionate, but somewhat niche audience, and I know how much work went into restoring it. I'm comfortable pre-ordering titles I like...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Departed -- in 4k UHD

I wouldn't rely on iPhone screengrabs for that determination. The screengrabs are 2778x1284, which is ~2.16:1 and, not coincidentally, the native ratio of certain iPhone screens. The HD screenshots are zoomed to fill that screen. The UHD grabs are not zoomed.

Press Release Criterion Press Release: Risky Business (1983) (4k UHD Combo) (Blu-ray)

That's ultimately why I prefer it, though I miss the gorgeous shot of Lake Shore Drive from the alternate ending. For me, the perfect ending would mostly use the alternate ending but replace Joel's "Isn't it grand?" voiceover line--which just ends the film on such a dour note--with the...

Yes, capture medium and screen size as well. 5-10% perceived improvement on a 65” screen may be perceived higher at 14 feet.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I understand the updates to the HEVC spec have mainly added support for additional profiles and metadata that do not really impact compression efficiency, but once streaming fully transitions to AV1 (which is 30% more efficient than HEVC), I expect streaming video to match or even surpass UHD.
