Of course that's silly, but I think we all get that it's for ratings issues. Same as the lack of blood in so many violent "PG-13" movies. It's a goofy conceit but one we can easily overlook, methinks. :)

And since he alludes to cunnilingus, we get sex scenes as well! :D

Didn't Nolan actually go back and "fix" Hardy's dialogue early in the process because he was so tough to understand? I might misremember but I have some recollection that Nolan DID touch up Hardy's dialogue.

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Where does Nolan say words aren't important? You imply every word of every Nolan movie is utterly incomprehensible and thus irrelevant.

I had no trouble with dialogue in "Oppy".

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Did anyone ever figure out what percentage of "Oppy" is IMAX? I searched online and couldn't find a good answer.

And review copies have yet to arrive! Mine has been shipped apparently, but I don't know if it comes today, tomorrow, ??? Usually Uni ships overnight but if they did so with this one, it hasn't appeared in the FedEx app.

Yeah, you'll note the ":D" next to that comment.

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Sure, but being a good movie often doesn't correspond to box office success. Lotsa fine movies that flopped. Lotsa crap that made massive $$$!

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Yeah, I don't think "Oppy" was in danger of being an actual flop - Nolan has too much of a fan base - but I didn't think it'd do much more than $100m US, and I had no idea what it'd do internationally. Honestly, I didn't make any specific predictions, but I'm definitely in the camp that thought...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I don't think we can ignore the "Barbenheimer" factor. No, "Oppy" didn't become a hit - and continue to sell tickets weeks after its debut - but that social media element gave it a major boost, methinks. The IMAX thing helped, too. Even if people didn't see it 70mm IMAX, the many news...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

"Dunkirk" could be sold as an action/war movie. "Oppy" is a bunch of nerds doing equations for 3 hours. :D Seriously - can you find any box office predictions where anyone said they thought "Oppy" would make $500m+? I think Uni was willing to take a loss as a bet that they'd get Nolan for...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Oh, I will admit I wasn't wild about the "stunt casting" in the movie. A bunch of small roles played by big names became a distraction. Not a reflection of the talent involved, but when big names pop up in small roles, that can take me out of the movie. Wasn't that the complaint about Damon...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

After many failed attempts, I finally saw "Oppy" real IMAX yesterday - not 70mm but still with all the 1.43:1 footage as intended. Liked it - moves fast and doesn't feel like a 3-hour movie. Handles the ever-changing chronology well and never turns confusing. Will admit that I don't think...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

An astonishing haul for a 3-hour drama about a historical figure. Seriously doubt anyone involved thought it'd make more than 25% of that total. "Oppy" felt like Uni's attempt to lure Nolan so they'd make more obviously commercial movies for them in the future, but I suspect they figured it'd...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

"Temple of Doom" also offered a pretty decent departure from "Raiders", whereas "Last Crusade" felt more like a warm embrace of the first movie's vibe/style. We can't claim that "BTTF3" was a reaction to the less than positive response many moviegoers felt with "BTTF2", of course, since they...

Have any prior Universal BDs used dual ARs?

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I thought "Wolf" was bloated and it felt like plastic Scorsese - almost self-parody. Whereas "Silence" was just a snoozer. So I'll have to disagree. :)

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I'd be shocked if "Dune 2" won BP. Maybe a nom, but win? Hard to believe. "Napoleon" is a good pick on paper. But like Scorsese, Scott has been awfully inconsistent for quite a while. Though could see "Napoleon" rewarded more as a "career Oscar" coming his way since the Academy has never...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I have no faith in Marty to make an actual great movie anymore. Been a while since he made anything I thought was really good. Will he get a nom? Sure - that's almost a given. The Oscars reward Marty out of reflex. And maybe "Moon" will be great. Just don't feel optimistic given his track...
  22. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Yeah, I have no idea what Oscar contenders will emerge the final 4+ months of the year, but "Oppy" must be considered an extremely strong candidate for both BP and BD. It's a historical drama - Oscar digs those! - that's gotten great reviews and is a hit. Certainly won't claim it's a lock for...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Just to clarify - because I'm too lazy to look for myself: "Oppy" is extended ONLY at IMAX 70mm screens?
  24. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Looks like "Blue Beetle" won't take over all the IMAX screens come 8/18 - at least at Lincoln Square, "Oppy" keeps the screen!

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Other way around, I think: Tom did that after the meme hit. And GG and MR returned the favor by posing with tickets for "MI7".
  26. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Yeah, I still see no evidence WB or Uni has anything to do with "Barbenheimer". They're happy to see its positive effect but they didn't come up with it.
  27. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I dunno - maybe WB will agree if those theaters sweeten the deal for "Dune 2" IMAX? And I think it's only a small percentage of theaters where this would happen - really just the ones with real IMAX, and those are small in number.
  28. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Sure, but that's usually the case with expensive movies where one studio wants to partner with another to reduce risk. The idea studios will suddenly go all "Miracle on 34th Street" and help advertise each others' movies seems unlikely, even with the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon.
  29. Colin Jacobson

    Oppenheimer (2023)

Maybe - I mean, once it became a "thing", studios were more likely to play along. When I was in Vegas, the Brenden chain made their own "Barbenheimer" posters. Noteworthy to me: zero mention of studios on it, so it clearly wasn't done with cooperation from WB and Uni. Part of my skepticism is...

    Oppenheimer (2023)

I got into an argument on another board about "Barbenheimer", as that guy seemed convinced it was the suits at the studios that came up with it. I'm 99.9% sure it was an organic social media thing - and I think it started as a joke. I mean, the 2 films seemed so opposite that it felt ludicrous...
