Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

That news broke before the release of Horizon, which likely annoyed much of the potential Yellowstone crossover audience.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

I don't think this is the "canary in the coal mine." It just means that most people, like you and me, had no interest in this. I'm still not clear who thought this was going to be a blockbuster, or why? It's never looked like a mass-appeal type of film. I would not have expected it to gross...

Part 2 is definitely going to theaters, as they've already been promoting that release as part of this first film's release.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

3 hours is one thing, but you're basically having to dedicate 12 hours to this project if it's going to be four separate films to tell the full story. That's a lot of time and money ($40-$50 in tix alone for just one person) if you intend to view them all theatrically.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

Reported budget for the first two films is $100 million, so they'd need to average a gross of about $150 million each to reach profitability. Not out of reach, but it would probably have to be mostly from North America as I don't think westerns always travel well internationally.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

It'll be interesting to see if these all get wide theatrical releases. Seems like if the first or second bombs or disappoints, the rest may go to streaming or be limited releases. I'm somewhat skeptical that mass audiences will want to sit through potentially 12 hours of this in theaters.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024)

It seems like they're committed to make all four parts. Supposedly the third film would already be shooting if not for the Hollywood strikes last fall. Costner is reportedly also self-financing a fair share of the cost, so it's not all on the studio.
