Chuck Williams's ISF Caibration of my Mitsu 55819

A few months back I had my Mitsubishi 55819 55" HDTV calibrated by Chuck Williams. Over the last two months, the TV has been a complete joy to watch. While ISF calibration can be pricy, I would rather have an ISF calibrated $2000 set than a non-calibrated $3000 one any day, and you'd still save...

    ISF Calibration by Chuck Williams

I just wanted to mention that two days ago I had my Mitsubishi 55819 calibrated by Chuck Williams. He was very professional and obviously has an ocean of experience. The job he did was top notch. If you are thinking of having a set calibrated and have the means to do so, it is worth it...

Okay, I surrender. I am more than confused!

Ascend Acoustics speaker packages all look very good and get a lot of high ratings from You can order them online at A set of them can run between $1100 and $1400 depending on the speakers you choose, but includes an excellent Hsu VTF-2...

Need Advice on this Budget Home Theater Package

You might look at speakers. Their low-end set can be picked up for $150. The Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver is an excellent choice for $300. The main thing I like about it are all five-way binding posts and two optical inputs, something you dont see in lower-end receivers...

    ISF Calibration in Northern Virginia?

I have a Mitsubishi 55819 55" HDTV I have had for about a year. I love the set, and regularly calibrate brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, and convergence with the THX Optimizer. I think its time to go into the big-leagues, though. I am interested in finding out who I might contact about...

(yet another) New HT Creation Thread

I would save the $200 and go for an Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. Hook up your sources to your display directly to avoid any weird conversions. Composite to S-Video conversions can't create material where it never existed. It wont look any better.

    a/v cables for component video???

If they're decent quality monster audio cables, they are probably fine. I've seen some relativly inexpensive Monster component cables for the $40 pricetag. You can always pay more but I doubt if you can ever justify the cost.

Help me choose: Entry Level HT

Onkyo TX-SR500 ($300) Home Theater Direct Level 1 ($150) Panasonic S35K Progressive DVD Player ($100) $550 and it should run circles around standard home theaters in boxes.

    B&W speakers $1500-2000 and others!!

Four B&W 601s, a CC6, and a HSU VTF-2 sub should run you under $1500. This will be my new setup as soon as I get the sub =D =D =D

I need some good budget speakers...

If you want a small system, the Boston Acoustics System 8000 is 500 and the System 9000 is $1000. If you want larger speakers, you might look at the Home Theater Direct Level 2 or 3 setup. At $1000 you may also look at the highly rated Ascend Acoustics setups...

    Paradigm vs. B&W vs. Polk

Four B&W 601s, a B&W CC6 center and a HSU VTF-2 subwoofer would probably do an excellent job at around $1500 total.

    Helping a friend $500 budget-receiver and speakers

You might try the Onkyo TX-SR 500 Receiver for $300 at Circuit City and the Home Theater Direct Level 1 speakers. Total cost should be about $500 including shipping.

    Speaker Cable Recommendation

I picked up a pair of Monster MTX-1 cables, they were $70 a pair for 12 foot cables with banana plugs. Probably too high for the "cut a power cable" crowd (of which I believe in spirit, if not with pocket book) but not snobby enough for the $1600 a foot golden wire crowd either. Still, they...

    Self Tuning / calibrating receivers?

Thanks for the advise. I have the upgrade bug but I think the DSP-A1 will do me a few more years of service =) It is a hell of an amp.

Panasonic S-35K Progressive DVD player opinions?

Does this player have the chroma bug? Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of this player with the cheapo deinterlacer vs the Genesis fancy-pants deinterlacer? Thanks!

Panasonic S-35K Progressive DVD player opinions?

That Spot review wasn't so bad but I was saddened to hear that the fancy deinterlacing chip had been changed to a cheaper all-in-one one. I'm not as excited about recommending this one to my friends like I was the 62k. Heck, the 62k was only $130. Still, it may be a fine player for...

    Self Tuning / calibrating receivers?

Another question. I imagine a system set up with the auto calibration is pretty accurate but wouldn't the difference in DVD players end up skewing it a little anyway? I know reference tones are drastically different when using a receiver vs using a DVD.

Home Theater Direct Level 1 or 2?

I talked to a friend of mine at work who picked up the Home Theater Direct Level 1s. I plan on getting over there with an SPL meter to see how they end up. I'll post here just in case anyone else is looking at these.

    New Pioneer Receivers?

The ability for a receiver to self-tune is a great idea. I have heard that the higher end elite models will actually equalize themselves out with a five band equalizer based on test tones. I am not sure which receivers have what tuning abilities, though.

    Self Tuning / calibrating receivers?

Ok, here's a tough question. I have a Yamaha DSP-A1 integrated amp from way back (about five years old). It's a great receiver, tons of power, but it doesn't have EX / ES processing or this self tuning feature. Hearing that it has a five / seven band equalization feature in it makes me wonder...

Panasonic S-35K Progressive DVD player opinions?

I remember that last year's Panasonic progressive scan DVD player was using a Faroudja multiplier chip to rebuild the progressive frame from the original source. I am sure this had little difference from the other progressive dvd players on the market but overall I found the RP-62 dvd player to...

Is 75db reference level too loud?

I know this has been answered before but how many people find that after setting their system to the 75db reference level their system is just too loud. Granted I live in an apartment but last night after tuning my system with the THX Optimizer on Moulin Rouge and then trying to listen to the...

    Powered Speakers?

I was actually interested in both, but it would make sense that the built-in powered sub is more common. Two more questions: 1. How are the results on a speaker with a built in sub compared to a normal speaker with a single external sub. Is there a noticable difference? 2. How would one...

    Self Tuning / calibrating receivers?

I heard of a receiver that was able to self calibrate itself. You held the remote and / or an attached microphone in your primary seating position and it self tuned the speakers for an equal frequency response across all of the main speakers. Has anyone seen this feature in other receivers...

    Powered Speakers?

I noticed a trend a couple of years ago for self-powered speakers or speakers with built-in powered subwoofers. I like the idea of a self contained speaker that can go from 20hz to 20khz in a single box but I understand the issues with a built-in sub and non-ideal positioning. Is the...

Home Theater Direct Level 1 or 2?

I have a lot of people who are interested in buying home theater systems on the cheap. The home theater direct products seem to be an excellent option for the choice. Has anyone done a serious comparison of the Direct Level 1s and 2s to similar price/performance setups? Would I be totally...
