This also interconnects with reviewing, or attempting to review 4k discs. Once a scan has been created from an analogue element, and some entity has affected it with digital tools, it’s extremely difficult to ascertain precisely what one is seeing. Making matters worse, any new disc based upon...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

My perception is the humor found in a possibly AI-produced or at least voiced piece, attacking AI. Does AI know how to properly swear?

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

This is a great review, presumably created by AI, inclusive of an AI narrator. But what it fails to understand is that these new 4k releases are perfect in every detail, as they’re precisely what the filmmaker desired his films to look like. That is not to say that had I created them, without...

604 relies. 43,000+ views. We seem to be inching slowly toward some sort of record for a generic disc review. I can tell you with comfort, that John Adams never had these numbers.

My point being that the more black area on the screen the less data throughput necessary. 1.78 devours data.

    Scanning a c. 100 minute film at 4k should run 10-12 Tops.

A new 4k scan, with color, could run $30-40k. Aliens won’t sell enough copies to warrant that expenditure.

I’ve seen Ben-Hur. Definitely a leper. After over 35,000 reads, and over 500 replies, no one, including yours truly, is going to get the disc they desire. Zarathustra has spuck. We have our disc. Like it or not. Next up, Todd Erwin’s extremely honest review of The Color Purple II.

If one desired the perfect appearance of an original 35mm print, a simple 4k scan of a timed IP would service the need.

Sorry. I’m confused by this post. Who or what is this “RAH” who apparently liked the original Patton Blu-ray? The same who praised the original Gangs of New York?

Courtesy of Mr. Hunt and Digital Bits: “True Lies, Titanic, and The Abyss were all mastered from 4K scans. Aliens was mastered from the 2K scan used for the previous Blu-ray release. Titanic was scanned in 2012. True Lies and The Abyss were done more recently. That's all per Geoff Burdick at...

I worked with Ryan while he was there. I would dispute the term restoration for any of those projects. This also doesn't answer the question. What were the base files?

I'm unaware of any serious studio / post house that was using 2k for anything other than IPs or dupes for video purposes. We were using 4k back in January of 2007.

HDR and DV are packages that don’t always relate well to older films. But the marketing makes it seem as though it’s a necessity and part of 4k. It isn’t. It’s also become a necessary part of streaming sales to have it included. That noted, there’s nothing wrong with treating a film much like...

The best example of the tech that I’ve seen was demoed for me by John Lowry. It worked. Grain gone as part of the process. It all depends upon the final result desired. I feel this worked, delivering a superior final product. The camera negs, masters et al are all in the vaults. This is...
