It's basically impossible to miss by the time the voice says "temPORal stability." The inflections are completely wrong. No human would say "temporal" that way, no matter if they were a native English speaker or not.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

OK, I get that. But James Cameron objecting to Aliens or True Lies or The Abyss being released in their original theatrical forms, with grain and colors as he himself originally photographed them before changing his mind years after-the-fact, is not a moral objection. It's just Jim Cameron being...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

That's what I'm saying. The phrase "moral right" is basically nonsense designed to sound more meaningful than it really is. I'm not arguing whether James Cameron has the legal right to do what he did to these movies. He clearly does. Philosophically, however, I wish there were better safeguards...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Despite use of the term "moral rights," this is entirely a legal argument and has nothing to do with actual morality. Had Snow decided that his sculpture would be improved by defecating on it, and sued to force the mall to comply with his change, would that also be his moral right as author of...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

It's an age-old philosophical question whether an artist really still "owns" the art after it's been released to the public. Does the work not belong just as much to the audience as to the artist at that point? In any case, unlike painting or sculpting, film is a collaborative medium. Although...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I guess my question is whether the moral responsibility should be to the artist or to the art. The artist is just a person, and as has become increasingly clear in recent years, all people are fallible and most of them are jerks. The art itself is the thing that should survive and transcend, but...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I find the use of the phrase "moral right" interesting. I understand what you're saying, but my feeling is that if an artist has a mental breakdown and tries to desecrate their work - and that work is a piece of art that has proven very meaningful to millions of people around the world since its...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Cameron did recolor all of his movies teal-and-orange. Also, before you say "nobody would," I think perhaps you should remember the example of William Friedkin tinting The French Connection purple. Filmmakers lose their marbles and do weird things to their old movies all the time.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I finished up my review of the Aliens disc over the weekend, and tried to come to grips with the color issue. After more comparisons, I'm feeling quite certain that even the 4K disc has the same color grade that we've seen since 2010, but the A.I. grain removal and detail enhancement just make...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Well, I've now tried to do a color comparison between the 4K disc and the old Alien Anthology Blu-ray. Frustratingly, the question of whether this is a new color grade or not still seems a little murky to me. My inclination right at this moment is to say that it's not. Colors are very similar...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I watched the 4K disc last night. I had initially only intended to check out a few minutes, but I got so caught up in the movie again I wound up staying up late to watch the whole SE. The almost totally grainless look for the movie is a little weird, but I'll be honest, I didn't hate it. The...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I think you well know that James Cameron was famous for the "steely blue" color timing of his movies until the advent of digital color grading, at which point he became obsessed with revising all his old movies to remove all the blue and inundate them with teal-and-orange instead.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Again, I haven't watched the 4K disc yet. I've just scanned through the Blu-ray that comes with it. From looking at that, no, the color grade appears to be exactly the same as the 2010 Blu-ray. I will try to watch the 4K disc soon.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

On the subject of colors, I'm not prepared to make a definitive proclamation right at this minute because I haven't watched the whole movie yet, and am only looking at the accompanying Blu-ray disc first. However, I ripped the new Blu-ray, as well as the 2010 Blu-ray, and scanned through the...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

To be fair here, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves may have been critically panned, but was a significant blockbuster hit, the second highest-grossing film of 1991 (behind Cameron's Terminator 2, ironically), and I believe has always performed well on home video. I would not call it a cult film any...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

How much to do it without color? I must be very gratifying to the makers of something like China O'Brien or Dust Devil to know that their movies are now more popular than a James Cameron blockbuster and can merit those expenses where his can't.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

In what regard? We do now have confirmation that Aliens was upconverted from the 2K scan and master from 2010. But no, we don't know why a new 4K scan wasn't performed. Short of James Cameron explaining his rationale for that, which seems unlikely, all we can do is speculate.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

In one of these Cameron threads, someone did post confirmation that the 2010 Blu-ray came from a 2K scan. As I posted a bunch of pages back, my suspicion is that Cameron was still happy with the work Lowry Digital did on the 2010 Blu-ray and wanted to use that as a starting point without...

The Universal 4K release of The Thing (from a different master) looks way better than Arrow's 4K remastered Blu-ray, IMO.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I think it looks great overall - certainly in comparison to the older Universal Blu-ray, which was a travesty. However, there are a lot of patches where the grain is really distracting. Typically, in the outdoor scenes (plenty of those in the movie) there's a very harsh grain texture against the...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Well, I haven't exactly been keeping a list, but off the top of my head Tremors is a disc I watched recently where the grain is extremely rough. But that's part of the problem, actually. A 4K scan directly off the negative can resolve individual grain particles in far greater clarity than ever...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Not everything needs to be in such extremes. I don't like transfers that have had all the grain stripped out of them any more than you do. But nor do I care for heavy, coarse, sandpaper-scraped-across-your-eyeballs grain either, which is the look favored on an awful lot of Arrow discs. A middle...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I was with Home Theater Magazine in 2008, and I can assure you that the studio got the message that the HT community was displeased with the transfer on the Patton Blu-ray. My editor and I had a meeting with Fox studio reps after we'd published an article very critical of that disc. The studio...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

So, they're saying now that the new master is based on the scan done in 2010. What hasn't been confirmed yet is whether it's also built off the existing de-graining work Lowry Digital did at that time, or if that work has been redone with new algorithms. If Cameron wanted to keep all of the...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

What I find ironic is that, at this stage in his career, James Cameron has effectively turned over care of his movies to Skynet.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I don't see a conflict between the two halves of your sentence. We can disagree with Cameron's reimagining decision and he could have done wrong by his movies.

A.I. is a tool. It can be used well or it can be used poorly, depending on the dictates of what the humans overseeing the project assign that tool to do.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I was about to ask that question as well. His use of the phrase "2K restoration" does not necessarily mean that the film scan was done at 2K. It might still have been a 4K scan with a 2K workflow for the digital processing. As I said above, Lowry Digital was doing 4K scans at least as early as...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Again with this claim that the 2010 master was 2K. Where are you finding documentation of that? Lowry Digital created that master for the Aliens Blu-ray, and they were doing 4K scans and mastering at least as early as 2006.
