UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

100%. The grain gave the movie a sense of verisimilitude that's gone now that it's all shiny 'n' peppy.

I don't think anyone has argued that no grain reduction is ever allowable/appropriate. Just that it be tasteful and still allow a gritty, grainy movie from 1986 to look like a gritty, grainy movie from 1986, not a peppy shiny film from 1986. Cameron may've hated the graininess of "Aliens" but...

Okay. I watched it. It looks all smooth 'n' shiny and not like a movie from 1986. Degrained to the point of sterilization.

Do I like what they did to the movie in this squeaky-clean-n-polished image? Nope. But damn, do I love this movie. I don't think I'd watched it since the 30th anniversary BD and I almost forgot how much I adore it. "Aliens" is a prime contender for my all-time favorite movie, and it still...

That seemed to be what studios did in the infancy of 4K discs. They had crazy bright UHD. They tamed it after a while to much more appropriate levels. But I guess some people want Nuclear HDR.

Sure, though the uproar about "French Connection" on BD was related to the colors. I think the dialogue change has only impacted streaming and not a BD release. Point remains: people used to get upset with tinkering down to home video releases. I mean, this goes back to "The Matrix" on DVD...

Yup. And people went nuts about how Lucas "reimagined" all the "Star Wars" films. People always get upset when filmmakers change colors for these releases. I really don't understand why Cameron's "reimagining" is A-OK when all the others got lambasted.

Despite how I might appear at times ;), I'm not delusional. I don't think Cameron - or Lucas, or whoever - will see my posts and say "that weirdo's right!" :D They want what they want and that's their right. But it remains my right to bitch and moan about it! :D And to be clear: I've not yet...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Sure, but I do view it as the slippery slope of revisionism just because grain removal inevitably alters the original image. Can they use technical whatnot to "bring back" what might be changed? Yeah, but that's still an artificial means that I think is unnecessary and potentially harmful. I...

And that's why some of us object to what's happened. Which I continue to feel confused that this position seems controversial. Has a desire to want film restoration vs. "shiny new reimagining" suddenly become outrageous?

But it's not like JC himself was gonna do the restoration work. Hand it off to people he trusts, let them do it, review the result, ask for changes if desired. Maybe he didn't want to pay for those "countless hours", but he wasn't gonna spend those hours himself.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Sure, but I want the movie to look the way James Cameron wanted it to look when released. Again, one can say "but that's not what he really really wanted!" But I want how he wanted it to look to the best of his abilities with the filmmaking tools of the time. Like I said above: wanting to see...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Feel free to argue semantics, but I think you understand I mean that I'd like to see movies look they way the filmmaker made them look during initial release. Of course, people will toss out all sorts of caveats. I just want a movie that's not been tampered with years later because the...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Couldn't the "it looks great if you don't know how it's supposed to look" argument be made for a lot of movies? Aren't we supposed to be about 4Ks and BDs looking as much like the way they're "supposed to look" as possible and not revised/revamped?

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

To me, I want a movie to look how it was supposed to look when it ran theatrically. Of course, that doesn't mean "hey, this doesn't look like the worn-out print I saw 4 weeks into the movie's run!" It's the platonic ideal of how the movie looked when the film ran at its best. Maybe I...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

Digital has leveled the playing field somewhat - no more prints to degrade - but even that format still has major inconsistencies. Of course, there's also IMAX and Dolby Cinema and whatnot to alter how movies look based on where you see them.

As will I - and its 2 siblings. Though I'm decidedly discouraged by the tampering done to the movies. I just wanna see - and hear - them as they looked when originally released without attempts to "fix" them.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I have more faith in memories of videophiles from screenings over the last 25 years or so - ie, in the "DVD review website era" during which these issues became more openly discussed and considered. Doesn't mean they're always accurate, but I simply think most of us are more conditioned to...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

I admit to skepticism when people say they remember precisely how a movie looked theatrically. Especially because theatrical exhibitions can vary so wildly. What a movie looked like on Screen A isn't exactly what it looked like on Screens B, C and D. I only saw "Aliens" once theatrically -...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Aliens -- in 4k UHD

The 1st 2 are by far the best. As a fan of the franchise, I can enjoy the others to varying degrees, but none of them come close to "Alien" and "Aliens". "3" is the next best.
