A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Better Place

Well, he must have had a hand in the editing, so - OH, you mean the review! Sorry! Oh, and congrats on Mr. Harris' write-up, Vincent!

    Zodiac - Due 7/24/07

Mr. Prior, if you're still checking in: Reports are beginning to surface that ZODIAC: DIRECTOR'S CUT clocks in at 163 minutes. My understanding was that this cut would be substantially longer than the theatrical issue. Can you confirm or deny?

Why does 1080i look better than 1080p from my Toshiba HD-XA2?

Thank you both for your thoughts - this is beginning to get confusing. I'm leaning more toward Cees' explanation, but will probably prevail upon Circuit City or some other to let me check out my XA2 on other displays, as per Mark. I'm hesitant to blame the player right off because the added...

    120Hz, HDMI 1.3, CableCard in a 1080p RP

Nobody? It's difficult researching this, what with all the proprietary-named marketing-speak all the companies engage in. It's really hard to find straight-forward specs on anything...

Why does 1080i look better than 1080p from my Toshiba HD-XA2?

An Addendum: The Player definitely took all the upgrades - it's displaying as version 1.6/T22m in the Update Menu. I've tried both of the DLP's HDMI ports, as well as 2 sets of cables, *BUT* the cables were both freebies - one came with Time Warner's HD-DVR, the other with Samsung's HD960...

Why does 1080i look better than 1080p from my Toshiba HD-XA2?

Got the Toshiba HD-XA2 from Amazon today. I downloaded what I assume to be all the updated firmware via ethernet (the machine displayed 36 downloads in progress), and am running thru HDMI into a Samsung DLP HL-S5087W. I spent quite some time calibrating with the HD and SD versions of Digital...

    120Hz, HDMI 1.3, CableCard in a 1080p RP

Which few manufacturers currently offer all three? Or are they all set to hit later this year?

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

Awesome - SXRD is looking more and more like the purchase... Oh, and I'm probably going for the Toshiba HD-XA2 over the HD-A20.

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

How is the zoom on the SXRD? does it crop off the sides of the image at all? And will it still work with HDMI-delivered content? It turns out the Samsung *does* have 'Zoom 1' and 'Zoom 2' settings, but they're not selectable in HDMI 1 or 2...

What's the model #? Sorry - should have asked that in my last post...

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

The Toshiba HD-A20 is my most likely purchase, as I want HD and hear great things about the upconversion. Apparently the unit doesn't have a 'zoom' function for 4:3 letterbox DVDs, which coupled with the Samsung DLP's lack of same (it only 'stretch-zooms'), may be another reason to look...

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

Oh, and Sean - actually it was your comment on the other thread that I was alluding to in the first place, so you're in the unusual position of confirming your own assertion! Can anyone else weigh in, yay or nay?

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

They don't even see it, trust me. And I've pointed it out. They've basically acted as guinea pigs for my eventual purchase, and they're ok with that. ;)

    Best upconversion on a 50"+ 1080p RPTV.

Steered my parents to buy a Samsung DLP HL-S5087W. Having now spent some time with the unit, I find I have no problem with the lamp-based DLP technology. The Rainbow Effect is there, but I'm used to it and it's not an issue. I like the TV just fine otherwise. That is, if it weren't for the...

    Dish or Direct Satellite HD

Wow - thanks for all the info. Some of it I'm clueless on just now (LiL, FIOS), but it's appreciated. What I'm gathering, however, is that for a die-hard movie fan (i.e. me), DISH may be my best bet. I'm certainly not going to be watching any sports, and general tv programming (documentaries...

    Dish or Direct Satellite HD

Does anyone (aside from Robert J, who was kind enough to reply when I mistakenly posted this in the wrong forum) have any opinions as to my question above: who delivers the better end image for HD, DirecTV or Dish Network? Thanks guys.

    DirecTV or Dish Network?

    Ah, gotcha. Thanks.

    Dish or Direct Satellite HD

Guess I should piggyback on this thread. I'm not pleased with the quantity - or especially the quality - of Time Warner's HD broadcasts. Too much compression, 'downrezzing', whatever. Just not up to snuff. It seems DirecTV and Dish Network are the dominant players in this game, with Dish...

Is 'D*' DirecTV? Or are you referring to something I'm unaware of?

I *guess* this is the place to post this. I'm not pleased with the quantity - or especially the quality - of Time Warner's HD broadcasts. Too much compression, 'downrezzing', whatever. Just not up to snuff. It seems DirecTV and Dish Network are the dominant players in this game, with Dish...

Do you think that's likely true for the NR and EE settings as well? I've currently got them as low as they can go...

    DVD players w/ internal calibration.

To clarify: I'm talking about players (like my Samsung DVD-HD960) that have menu options for things like brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction, and edge enhancement(!). My question: what in the hell are these settings affecting, exactly? How do they work, at what stage...

Samsung DLP w/ Samsung Up-Converting DVD Player

Using a Samsung DVD-HD960 Player to up-convert standard-def DVDs to display at 1080p on a Samsung DLP HL-S5087W. Not that happy with the result. Lotsa macro-blocking. I've got the player's resolution set to 1080p, and the TV doing whatever it's automatically set to do to the incoming HDMI...

No one has any thoughts on the Samsung Service Menu settings?

Samsung DLP w/ Scientific Atlanta HD DVR

Hi Gregg, That's pretty much what I figured. Unfortunately, it's the configuration I set up for my parents (I guess they're somewhat my guinea pigs here), and they weren't interested in a disc-based HD system for now. I did convince them to invest in an up-converting Standard-Def DVD...

Samsung DLP w/ Scientific Atlanta HD DVR

I'm concerned with the image quality on HD content delivered to the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR, displayed with a Samsung DLP HL-S5087W, HDMI connection. I'm seeing an awful lot of compression, which to some extent I expect on oudated or indifferently-encoded transfers of older...
