OCTOBER 31: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! 51) The Abominable Snowman (of the Himalayas) (1957) (Blu-ray Disc) 4/5 stars - One of my favorite Hammer films. A doctor of botany, played by Peter Cushing, is in the Himalayas staying at a monastery, while ostensibly researching the rare local plant life with...

OCTOBER 30: 49) The World's End* (2013) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 3.5/5 stars - Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost attempt to get a third lightning strike with this film after Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, with mixed results. It certainly has its moments, and much of their trademark comedic...

OCTOBER 27: 48) Fright Night (1985) (Blu-ray Disc) 4/5 stars - A perennial fave, Fright Night is a fun, affectionate, and well-done homage to the local Saturday afternoon horror TV shows many of us grew up with. So '80's it has its own perm, the film has aged pretty well, although I find that...

The great thing about Netflix, and streaming services in general, is that there's no commitment. Sign up for a month, watch all the content that interests you, then cancel your subscription before it renews. $14 for a month of HD, and $18 for a month of UHD. Less than the cost of a typical...

OCTOBER 26: 47) Deep Red* (1975) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 4/5 stars - I'm not what you would call a real Dario Argento fan, but now that I've seen Deep Red I might be persuaded. After discovering the body of a brutally murdered psychic, pianist Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) tries to solve the case...

OCTOBER 25: 45) The Night House* (2020) (Blu-ray Disc) 3.5/5 stars - A "ghost story" with some originality and a great performance from Rebecca Hall, The Night House is an entertaining film. It starts off slowly and a little shakily, but manages to pull things together and get pretty creepy...

OCTOBER 24: 44) It Came From Outer Space (1953) (Blu-ray Disc) 4/5 stars - An alien "invasion" film that I've always loved simply because it goes against the formula of most similar productions from this era, It Came From Outer Space is just great. The cast, lead by genre stalwart Richard...

OCTOBER 23: 43) The Brotherhood of Satan (1971) (Blu-ray Disc) 2/5 stars - On a day when I only had time for ONE movie, I picked The Brotherhood of Satan. A melodramatic tale about a small town populated with centuries-old Satan worshipers who keep themselves going by sacrificing small...

OCTOBER 22: 42) The Invisible Man (1933) (4K UHD Disc) 4/5 stars - Some of the humor falls flat, and while I know James Whale loved Una O'Connor for some reason, I find her completely annoying and she takes me out of the film. However, The Invisible Man manages to rise above its shortcomings...

OCTOBER 21: 40) Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) (Blu-ray Disc) 3.5/5 stars - A direct sequel to 1958's Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness definitely does NOT live up to its predecessor. Even though much of the same talent is involved, sans Peter Cushing, this film pales in comparison to...

OCTOBER 20: 38) Halloween (1978) (4K UHD Disc) 4/5 stars - Still great, it's even greater in the 4K UHD just released by Scream Factory/Shout! The film has NEVER looked (or sounded, in Atmos) this good. 39) Lights Out* (2016) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 3/5 stars - The film begins with a very...

OCTOBER 19: 35) Frankenstein (1931) (4K UHD Disc) 5/5 stars - Still my favorite Frankenstein film (not counting Young Frankenstein). The sets, the atmosphere, Colin Clive's dizzying schizophrenic portrayal of Victor and, most of all, Boris Karloff's positively brilliant turn as the tragic...

In this case the character development makes all the difference in the world. However, you and I seem to have different tastes, so I wouldn't take my opinion as the last word. All the more reason to watch the DC and make up your own mind. ;)

OCTOBER 17: 32) The Mummy (1959) (Blu-ray Disc) 3.5/5 stars - Hammer's take on this tale is entertaining, but falls short of being really good. Lee and Cushing are awesome, as usual, but it drags a bit and to be honest, looks kind of cheap (which it was). But, it gets an extra half a star just...

OCTOBER 16: 30) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) (4K UHD Disc) 4/5 stars - Thanks mostly to an absolutely superb performance by Gary Oldman as Vlad the Impaler/Dracula, this film has always been a favorite of mine in the pantheon of vampire movies. Stylishly directed by Francis Ford Coppola, he...

OCTOBER 13: 26) The Mummy (2017) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 1.5/5 stars - SO much money and talent involved, how could it possibly go wrong? Well, it did. Bigtime. This film is a disaster from start to finish. Tom Cruise is 100% wrong for his part, the humor falls flat, the "mythos" it tries to set...

OCTOBER 11: Shifting to a TV series while out of town: 22) The Witcher - S1 E1 - The End's Beginning (2019) (Netflix 4K Streaming) 4/5 stars - Sure, it has its problems, but I find this Netflix series pretty entertaining. OCTOBER 8: 20) The Meg (2018) (iTunes 4K Streaming) 3/5 stars - Jason Statham and his usual schtick is about the only thing that salvages The Meg. It's a slick production that looks and sounds great, even if some of the giant shark CGI effects are dodgy. The story? Well, best not to think about...

OCTOBER 7: 16) The Quatermass Experiment (1955) (Blu-ray) 4.5/5 stars - A well done tale of alien contamination, this Hammer film is always entertaining. The creature effects at the end of the movie are convincing, creepy, and original, even if you CAN see the wires. 17) Quatermass II (1957)...
