A Few Words About A few words about...™ Dogman - in DVD

Why settle for the DVD when a Blu from the UK is available? I've had my copy for months.

Official KINO Insider Announcements Thread: STRICTLY MODERATED: READ GUIDELINES

Let me just add my voice in support of having the original US theatrical cut of the film faithfully represented on home video. I saw an IB Tech print of GBU projected in summer of 2015 and the colors on that looked nothing like the "yellow-ized" abomination that MGM released. I am also concerned...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Dick Tracy -- in Blu-ray

I used to have the LD. If I recall correctly, the Academy ratio was used on that release.

Blu-ray Review HTF Blu-Ray Review: KICKASS Combo Pack

I wouldn't call it satire exactly. It turns some of the conventions of comic book superheroes on their head, but it also at times embraces those conventions. Specifically, when Kick-Ass is trying to do his thing classic irony-of-situation is achieved: reality falls short of fantasy. But when Hit...

Does anyone own GATE OF HELL from Turner/Movies Unlimited...?

UPDATE: A message showed up in my inbox the other day, completely out of the blue: At first I was a little freaked that I was being approached by someone I didn't know, on a matter where I had not initiated contact. But I soon got over that once I realized what he was saying (and I have to...

PASSION & POETRY: THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH documentary in region 2

Sure: http://www.eldorado-film.de/the_film_passion_poetry.htm In the event, I ordered through amazon.de as they had something else I wanted. If you combine orders, the shipping doesn't go up, and it's possible to come out ahead that way.

Does anyone own GATE OF HELL from Turner/Movies Unlimited...?

Okay, my copy came and the release is utterly worthless. Sourced from videotape, the image is horizontally stretched, rendering all the actors short and fat. Detail is lacking. Subtitles are blurry and very difficult to read. The original print was in very bad shape: lots of damage and missing...

Universal and TCM's Partnership For Made-To-Order DVD

The question that no one has asked yet is the most important one: Who's doing the actual MOD? If it's Allied Vaughn again we're in trouble. In my last batch of Warner Archives, every single title freezes 30 seconds before the end. I don't object to DVD-Rs, just DVD-Rs that are shoddily produced.

Thanks for the tip. I'll order a copy and report back.

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

My copy of "The Bribe" freezes up about 30 seconds before the end of the film. The audio playback continues (somewhat erratically) and I am able to hear Charles Laughton's final line that caps the film, but this DVD is a substandard product.

Several hundred Warner DVDs are going OOP

In light of what is being reported about the DVD market, pressed discs for standard DVDs are on the way out: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/studios-hurt-as-dvd-sales-fall-and-rentals-grow-2009-09-22?dist=dist_smartbrief?dist=dist_smartbrief&dist=dist_smartbrief&dist=dist_smartbrief

African Queen in October???? (Now taken off schedule; see post 31)

Yeah, I bought the new edition, but I don't have the previous one to compare it to. It compares well with the original DVD release, however, in terms of image quality. As far as the new extras go, the commentary with Towne and Fincher is just so-so: the occasional observation is offered, but...

PASSION & POETRY: THE BALLAD OF SAM PECKINPAH documentary in region 2

Oops. I should have pointed out earlier that it's cheaper to buy through the producer's website than through amazon.de. The cost of the disc itself isn't all that different, but amazon.de really burns U.S. customers on shipping.

Criterion Press Release: AK 100: 25 FILMS BY AKIRA KUROSAWA

Almost certainly R1 Blu-ray editions are coming as the films are even now being released on that format in Japan. Toho has 21 volumes that they will be releasing on Blu-ray in 3 sets of 7 over the next half-year or so; the first box-set of seven will be released on October 23rd., the second is...

When they re-release some of the (better selling) titles as pressed discs, the old poster art will be part of the marketing strategy to get fans to buy the title again.

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

They're down to $25.99 now. And everything over $25 at Amazon goes out with free shipping. It may be that these are pressed discs. It's also possible that the titles will be Amazon exclusives for only a limited period, and then revert to the archive as MOD discs.

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

On your view, Simon, there's no reason why WB can't launch a competent website, or subcontract their MOD operation to a firm that knows how to do progressive transfers. Sorry, experience tells another story.

DVD Review HTF DVD REVIEW: The Friends of Eddie Coyle

I hadn't seen the film before viewing this DVD and was quite surprised by it. I was expecting something flashy and got something much more subdued. Also, the way Mitchum is used is rather unique. Gives off a great 70s vibe, though.

    Film Noir - LIST

Ah, a second Noir set: that must be where Human Desire is going.
  22. jack phillips

Oh hell yeah! Doc Savage comes to DVD!

And anyway, WB subcontracted the operation to Allied Vaughn, who, needless to say, was the low bidder for the contract.

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Just did an online WB survey based on my recent purchase of Archive titles (the link came in an email). I was asked what I thought of the PQ, audio, price, packaging, whether I noticed that there were other things for sale at the website, my satisfaction with the website. They also wanted to...
