Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Chu, Thanks for sparking this lively discussion. Unlike Lee and some others, I have no experience actually listening to, or measuring in any way, systems with different levels of jitter. I have no scientific explanation for why jitter levels in the picosecond range are audible. However, I...

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Chu, That's exactly why I would rather not judge this sort of thing... if a new clock makes me feel better, it's worth it (at least at the cost to me). If it actually sounds better, that's wonderful. Not that I'd be able to prove it, though...

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

"Recording engineers, and I don't mean you Lee, should worry a bit more about making decent recordings and it ain't because of jitter!" Oh man, that is far more true than anything else said in this thread. Well, eventually I'll have to put in a new clock circuit and tell you if it makes...

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Chu, The best explanation of jitter that I can remember reading is by Jon Risch: http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/jitter.htm Not that I can speak to any of these claims from actual experience.

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Haha, that's wonderful. But seriously though, I think these things are a bit more complicated than measuring a jitter number and saying it's below the threshold of audibility. I mean, come on, why does one opamp sound better than the other (and discrete components better than any opamp) when...

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Chu, I see what you mean about 2ns being a very low amount of jitter. Haven't tried listening for it myself but I can imagine that's inaudible. How's jitter measured, anyway? Would this mean that all transports sound the same once they get below a certain jitter threshold?

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Well, there's lots of debate about where jitter comes from, how to reduce it and how much it really matters. There's one DIY audio guy (Peter Daniel) who *really* knows his stuff and tweaks his equipment a lot, listening for the differences. He built a truly high-end DAC using paralleled B-B...

Will a good external DAC make an Average Transport sound fantastic?

Brett, Give me 2 months and I'll tell you. I'm building Scott Nixon's simple/cheap yet very well designed DacKit (which is available for $250 as a finished product). The disadvantage of that DAC is its limited output capability since it has passive I/V conversion and no output stage, but...
