Hum usually is caused by improper grounding. I'd start there next.

The use of an amplifier depends on your signal strength. A bad signal in will only be a bad signal out of the amplifier. If you get an amplifier, put it as close to where the cable enters the house, to amplify all of the lines simultaneously.

One of the diferences between the Elite line and the non-Elite line is the fact that most of the Elite's have MOSFET amps while the others have Hybrid amps.

Disconnect your speaker wires and turn it back on. If it dies, then it isn't the wires. If it doesn't then hook up the wires 1 by 1 until it does.

FYI... I had a probalem with a Pioneer Elite receiver I purchased over the internet, the store is probably 2500 miles from my house. I took the unit and a copy of the receipt to an authorized pioneer service center and they fixed it no questions asked.
