Yes, USB requires more CPU attention. As I said, use a real external device interface. Apple builds them in for a reason. -

I have done full recoveries from Time Machine. Worked fine. The important thing is that once the drive is plugged in and setup, it happens continuously and automatically. Processor resources should be minimal. And sure USB is slow; use FireWire or Thunderbolt (or USB 3).
