I think another aspect that would throw people off is that the movie almost seems about 50% basterds, 50% Emmanuelle's character's situation, and they might go in expecting 100% basterds. I loved how the film played out, just sayin'.

This mirrored my situation almost exactly. I read the books after I saw TTT in the theater. But it was the EE of FOTR that completely brought me around. The intro and alll other additions in the FOTR:EE sold me, whereas the TE on it's own with no prior knowledge was a turn off.
