Vertigo: Universal Legacy Series -- no mono track

Unfortunately it would appear that the people who actually want to see and hear films as they were originally made are a dwindling minority. OK, the track on the Masterpiece edition isn't that great but it's a damn sight better than the godawful remix. I was planning on buying the Legacy in...

Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection - Oct 14, 2008

I presume you mean Stephen Rebello's 'The Making of PSYCHO' - incidentally he is doing the commentary on the Legacy DVD. From page 171 "World audiences saw slightly different versions of the picture, depending on local censors. On November 21, censors in Singapore shortened the stabbing of...

Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection - Oct 14, 2008

Interestingly the version of PSYCHO shown on UK TV last night was the US version with missing shots detailed in this thread.

Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection - Oct 14, 2008

Yes, that's the one. In fact I think it was the very first VHS I purchased and it cost a fortune then! PSYCHO has been released on DVD in the UK on a couple of occasions - it would be interesting to know which version this is. I only have the R1 edition myself so cannot comment.

Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection - Oct 14, 2008

If I remember correctly this 'pre cut' version of PSYCHO is actually the one seen in the UK which always included these shots unlike the US version which was censored. This is the version that appeared on VHS years ago and has been shown on UK TV.

    JAMES BOND ULTIMATE COLLECTION

I have seen these films in many incarnations over the past 30 years or so and the SE editions are more accurate the how the films looked in cinemas (i.e. dirty, scratched and 'film-like' !!!). I think the OHMSS clip shows the day and night difference in the colour timing.

    JAMES BOND ULTIMATE COLLECTION

I couldn't agree more. This backs up my original comments that the people working on the remastering/colour timing of these films clearly have no idea of how the films looked back in the cinema (and in other home video incarnations to a large degree). It would appear that they have been retimed...

James Bond Ultimate Ed Framing Issues

Yes , still the same as previous editions - no next film is announced at the end, instead a wipe removes the title (which on the original prints was OHMSS).

Why are some Bond DVDs so hard to find?

It was nothing to do with 9/11...it was withdrawn because of a problem with the UK distribution rights.

    MGM Lean & Hitchcock Releases

Couldn't agree more. I can see no point in replacing the Criterions. What more can they do to them? The transfers (especially Notorious) are superb and the extras are extensive and not your usual fluff. As for the Lean collection, again I can't see any reason to replace the Criterions. They may...

    The James Bond DVDs again?

The first NINE have mono tracks with the exception of Thunderball which was remixed in 5.1 for the THX laserdisc and this is the transfer used on the SE DVD. They are currently remixing and remastering the early films into 5.1 for the next release.

Anyone else have a HUGE problem with Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson?

Couldn't agree more. Nigel Bruce is one of the main reasons I don't like the Universal series (apart from the films not sticking to the original stories and updatingthem to modern times!). I think Bruce is OK in Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes but that's it. I...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell

Nice to see this underrated gem getting another chance on DVD. Despite the minimal cuts on the R1 release it is still a very good transfer with excellent sound. The commentary backs this up..... but it is good to see Hammer returning to their roots and not selling the film on sex, instead...

    Info on Bond 5.1 remasters....

The stories about alternate versions of the Bond films are all Bo**ocks...Goldfinger was the same in the US as in the UK. Like BobG said - I think you are referring to the TV versions which have taken to adding digital underwear! All the films are the same the world over save for the obvious...

Fox: Request for Sunrise DVD to be made available outside the US

Count me in - I'd love a copy. Surely Fox would make more money by making it available elsewhere or at least releasing it as normal and then we can import it.

    singing in the rain

Absolutely fantastic! As mentioned above - quite possibly one of the finest transfers of a classic film of this age. The colours literally jump off the screen. Two words... BUY IT!

Who can recommend Britain's 'The League of Gentlemen' to me?

"We didn't burn him!" I take back what I said about the language not travelling well - I guess it works alright for at least one American!

Who can recommend Britain's 'The League of Gentlemen' to me?

Yes, I agree that the DVD's are worth every penny. The commentaries are among the very best I've listened to. Very informative, funny and a great insight into where they reference material from and why. There are a number of deleted scenes and some interesing SFX shots. The Xmas special has a...

Who can recommend Britain's 'The League of Gentlemen' to me?

I can absolutely recommend The League of Gentlemen but may not be something that appeals to everyone! It has a cult following in the UK but I'm not sure how the humour would translate abroad as a lot of it is very British. A lot of the situations/characters are drawn from and/or parodies of...

Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) ... Anyone know the plan?

Excellent post Philip - well explained! To answer Andrew - Yes the discs do get better but still not reference quality. Some are better than others. But as you say - no plans for a UK release so the R1 is the best bet. I understand that ALL the episodes are available in a box ser in Japan - if...

Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) ... Anyone know the plan?

It is ironic that for years of bad Watson's you finally get two really good ones that it hard to choose between. I saw Brett and Hardwicke in the stage play THE SECRET OF SHERLOCK HOLMES twice (I don't know if it got to the States?) and have to say that both of them were absolutely superb. Two...

Nice to know that som emore discs are on the way. It is such a pity that the first batch were of such poor quality. They improved with later releases but still very poor. I understand that the negatives are in bad shape anyway but this doesn't excuse the really bad compression, floating images...

Robert Harris on The Bits - 11/12/02 column - OFFICIAL THREAD

I have always loved The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp , the Criterion DVD makes me love it even more. What a film! It certainly belies its age and the colours are gorgeous. There are moments that are just stunning...the use of montage, music, the acting (Walbrook's speech is a real tearjerker)...

    DVD's with cinematographer commentary tracks?

Can't comment on THE AFRICAN QUEEN - but A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH is a short featurette not a commentary. It appears to be part of a longer version of the documentary that appears on the Criterion BLACK NARCISSUS.
