MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men

And a further follow-up: DVD Beaver's comparison page confirms that the 50th Anniversary Edition is anamorphic, and shows it to be a lovely transfer, too.
  2. Douglas Bailey

MGM Press Release: 12 Angry Men's listing for the 50th Anniversary Edition says "Anamorphic Widescreen 1.66:1". I don't know how trustworthy that is given that no other e-tailer lists the same information, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they have the skinny. Edit: I lied. DVDWorld has the same information...

The official BLADE RUNNER SE thread. (Check out page 8 and #790.)

I picked the new edition up while in the UK over Christmas: does that count? It's definitely worth having (ooh! hardcover!), but the new material isn't integrated as well as I'd expected: the book is really the current US edition with several new chapters - covering the Final Cut, the DVD set...

JIGOKU (Criterion) Defective DVD Replacement Info

Not to take us too far off-topic, but... what's wrong with the Criterion M disc? I haven't heard of any issues with that title.

    Ivanhoe 1982 on DVD??

I haven't heard anything, but I'd cheerfully pick this adaptation up were it released. So that's two votes... :-)

JIGOKU (Criterion) Defective DVD Replacement Info

Thanks very much for the information, Jeff; as someone who hasn't ever seen the film, I wouldn't have known it was a problem. And I'm now going to hold off watching it until I can get the corrected edition, so that my first experience isn't affected by this glitch. Much appreciated.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail...Again?

The Criterion laserdisc of MPatHG was 1.66:1, so there's another data point in favour of that being the correct AR for the film.

A Few Words About A few words about... The Searchers -- in SD (Some potential bad news See Post #139)

You mean the laserdisc set put out by Fox? I'm puzzled; why would Warner have said anything about that set?

    The All-New and Improved Criterion!

My only real gripe with the new look is that by putting the tilted-C logo in the exact same spot on all covers, they end up covering some artwork with it (look at the Six Moral Tales box cover for an example). I'd almost rather they kept that logo off the front covers - making do with the...

Star Wars discussion from The Bits...

Count me among those who love the original OT films, but who aren't feeling any great interest in the non-anamorphic DVD releases. I already own the 1993 laserdiscs, and will not be inclined to spend further money for these films if Lucasfilm isn't going to offer me a significant upgrade in...

Brainstorm, any news of a re-release?

I don't have the DVD, so corrections are welcome, but my understanding from old discussions in is that the "real world" sequences are in 1.85:1, and that the image shrinks vertically to 2.2:1 for the "brainstorm" sequences (so that they fill less screen space and have less visual...

    The Shining OAR or MAR

Vincent_P, that was my conclusion, too; the helicopter blades are visible even with 1.66:1 or 1.85:1 matting, but the helicopter shadow on the hillside is hidden when the film is matted.

ATTN ALL: King Kong Box Set With Collector's Tin, Son Of Kong, & Mighty Joe Young!!!

I'm dumping the outer box and the tin in the attic and just shelving the Kong digipak (and the Amaray cases for Son and Joe) individually. The tin is actually very pretty, but I don't have enough free shelf space to keep it on display; I need that room for all the frickin' Warner DVDs I'm...

    November Criterion releases

Agree 100% with Elijah's comments. The Criterion transfer is that much more of a revelation after having seen this film transferred badly to DVD twice before. The colours are just fantastic – the green hills in the opening scene, the red and yellow battle flags, the pale rose sunsets – and the...

HTF REVIEW: Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

As for Star Wars dialog I misheard when I was four, I thought Dark Invader was talking about the dark side of the forest. To this day, it sounds to me as though Obi-Wan, when reacting to the destruction of Alderaan, says "as if millions of oysters had suddenly cried out". I know it's...

REVENGE OF THE SITH DVD Review up and running...(let the flood begin)(SNEAK LOOK POST #146)...

I'm most interested by Bill's comment (based on Jim Ward's statement) that the DVD contains the unaltered theatrical cut of RotS. This makes it the first Star Wars film—and the first film directed by George Lucas—to make it to DVD in its original theatrical version.

A Few Words About A few words about... Batman Begins

I'm with you. Maybe it was just a mistake on the part of the underpaid, untrained non-union projectionist who no doubt set up the film at my local multiplex, but I found the soundtrack painfully loud. It's not a good sign when I have to sit through the fight scenes with my fingers in my ears...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Toy Story 10th Anniversary Edition: MUST BUY

Tin Toy and Luxo, Jr. are both in the Ultimate Toy Box set. Knick Knack appears in modified form on the Finding Nemo DVD. I'm not aware of any DVD release of The Adventures of Andre and Wally B. or Red's Dream.

Think The Blues Brothers (25th Aniv Ed) will be worth buying again?

The inclusion of the original theatrical cut and the possibility of a better-placed (or better-encoded) layer change are enough to interest me.
