If you're looking for a decent 4:3 RPTV set CHEAP, the 51" Panasonic 51wx43 (2003 model) has an MSRP of @$1500 and can be had for under $1200. Most 4:3's are dropping in price.
For Lew and Tim This has certainly been a dilemma but let me add this info. Most of my watching is off DirecTV--so my 4:3 big screen shows most everything that way. What local programming I watch now is thru rabbit ears so that too is 4:3 and, DirecTV has advised that in a few months local...
I thank all of you for your input but I guess I didn't make myself clear. It is not the watching part that concerns me. It is the technical aspect of the sets---and the resulting damage to one's TV screen if one watches programming with black bars present all too often. If I buy a 4:3 TV now...
My 35" bit the dust and I need a new TV. Putting aside personal preferences I am concerned about black bar burn on the TV screen. If I buy a 16:9 now my wife watches all local programming so there will be black bars left and right or chopped off video top and bottom. If I buy a 4:3 now, by 2006...
Kevin- Many thanks! With bitstream showing push the joystick to the north and bingo!! Wonder why Toshiba doesn't put this in their manual? ...or maybe I'll check just one more time. Anyway, mucho thanks John G
Many DVDs come with both Dolby Digital and DTS. They also have built-in setup menus from which one can select their sound track of preference for listening. However, I have at least one DVD with multiple surround tracks (DD5.1 and DTS5.1) that has no startup/setup menu at all. My DVD player's...
For Marc H-- Thanks for the response. Sooner or later I plan on adding a 2 channel amp for the M22's but budgetary constraints will limit me. Assuming the Newcastle is the pre/pro, have you any recommendations for a two-channel amp in the 3 digit domain? Also, have you tried any decent tube...
For Marc H- Am close to buying the M22ti's--only wondering if using one of them for the center too makes sense. Have you A-B'd this setup vs using the VP100 or VP150? Also, how sensitive are the M22's to their electronics? I just purchased the Sherwood Newcastle R-863--might sometime buy a...
The reviews I've read make one salivate over the M3s and M22s--trouble is most of those reviews are on websites that are showing Axiom advertisements. The 5 speaker shootout review (cheaphometheater?) might suggest they have substantial competition close to their price range. I have no doubt...
Upgrading an antiquated home theater system. Need 4 surround speakers. Leaning towards switchable dipole/bipoles. Have B&W fronts. Need to keep it under $150/per. Cambridge? Polk? Other?
For John Kotches--
Was high-end dealer in 80's but I must confess my recent knowledge re: surround sound receivers is limited.
My dinosauric way of hooking up active subwoofers is to main stream them through the front speaker connects using the crossover in the sub. This has always worked...
A comment re: Sherwood
I am in the process of trying to acquire either the 863 or 963......and I've owned other Sherwood units before.
One of "the best" things about Sherwood, aside from the fact that their products are outstanding sonic values is their customer support. Like Outlaw they...
For John Kotches--
For 34 years now I have been in technical staffing. In the 70's and 80's I spent many hours recruiting and supplying technical writers to the likes of Westinghouse, AT&T and Bell Labs....both hardware and software.
I have been amazed at times how some of the most...
To the best of my knowledge Onkyo won't permit the same dealer to carry both so, no..... but frankly, I'm so close to being convinced there are no differences, I really didn't try. For the $150 difference in SRP and taking into account the cost of the additional features on the Integra, what...
Matt--
Whenever you have a mass marketer there's lots of bucks to be made by those who are unethical and greedy. And, frankly, judicious, well-intentioned and limited trans-shipping never hurt anyone particularly when it is done between a couple of local dealers who at times need a single...
Matt-
Your statement about Rotel, B&W etc is exactly on target--these ARE companies that do tightly hold their product, police it etc....which is fine....at least they're not hypocrits. If you want something in their line, there's one way to get it, you know up front what that is, and there's...
Since I am not a components engineer I cannot be certain but based on input I have from some reasonably reliable people, including techs, I think the only differences between Onkyo and Integra are some features and cosmetics. Internally, I doubt they are any different.
In looking at the 797...
In considering tubes vs. solid state, one must understand that mating components homogenously is more important than anything else. Tubes distort differently than transistors and in general, tubes do offer a more pleasing and warm sound to the human ear. I've been told that a tubes distortion...
Sam-
When I was a dealer, I treated my customers the way I always wanted to be treated.....sounds a bit idealistic but I'm the only one who has to look at myself in the mirror every morning..........
You're welcome!!
John
Matthew-
My beef is not with honest, fair, informed dealers. My beef is with manufacturers who want their cake and eat it too--they want to hammer the consumer with their n0-warranty
demands JUST so they can pump up their profits.
There are some manufacturers who know how to develop and...
Looks to me like Yamaha is trying their best to incur the wrath of the hifi consumer. Their products are sonically mediocre at best--IMHO--like their speakers!!
I hope they continue such consumer unfriendly policies--then the likes of Sherwood, HK et al will be more appreciated.
Funny...
Ryan--forget the Yamaha. It has some nice features but is way overpriced--used to be 1200, now 1000 and even that's too high and Yamaha knows it!
Marvins right...if you can afford the 863--forget the rest!
If you want an uncluttered unit a Denon is the last thing I'd consider....their front panel layout is the most confusing arrangement I've seen....
Second, if you want good 2 channel stereo from a receiver you need to find a unit that is US designed.....sorry, but our popular friends to the...
I'D LIKE TO PUT MY TWO CENTS INTO THIS FORUM:
For the sake of credibility, I used to be a custom, high end audio dealer...and a lot of what goes on in the audio retail business is NOT obvious to the normal consumer. Most dealers carry and sell why they can make money on....it's their...
THE TRUTH ABOUT WARRANTIES
EVER SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE???
WARNING TO OUR "VALUED" CONSUMERS:
The warranty on (manufacturer) products is NOT VALID if the products have been purchased from an unauthorized dealer/on-line E-tailer. A list of our dealers can be obtained by calling...
