Actually the tweeter is not too bad especially for the money, but the woofer is a bit of a dud. I found it to not only sound bad but the break-up in the upper ranges make it unusable for anything over 1kHz (unless you like the sound of a ringing metal cone). Such drivers are not easy to work...
Technically yes, but not much. Maybe half of a db at best. Also, it may give a little at 20Hz but you may also loose a little at 50Hz as the bottom end starts to roll off a little sooner.
Yea, yea, that's funny too. As a loudspeaker designer I always have to consider what women think about the look of a design. You'd be surprised how many men have told me that they really wanted to build a line source speaker but the wife said no way.
Oh boy what a thread. Think of the damping material as something used to tune a box. Adding more damping to the box means that the woofer has to force the air in the box through the damping material. This slows down the air flow in the box and makes the box appear to be larger than...
Todd, what happens when you lay an MTM speaker on its side, then move off axis, you get into a situation where one woofer is further away (in time) than the other. Once it is delayed enough to be out of phase with the other woofer it cancels it and causes a dip in the response. How far off...
Thanks Eric, If you like the cleaner more accurate sound and want the energetic punch as well, then you'll have to look to some of our larger models. :) I bet your parents are pleased. Nice job.
I agree and have found that the smaller drivers have many advantages over larger ones, and yes, high SPL's at low frequencies does require greater Sd's. One always has to weigh out what is important to them. High SPL's are not hard to make. Sound quality is a different issue, and where I...
There is nothing wrong with utilizing reflected energy so long as when the signal reaches your ear it accurately reproduces the signal that it was supposed to. Obviously sending high frequency in one direction, mids one way and lows another will not be accurate and could indeed be called...
The very idea that a woofers output across the board is limited by its size is false. This line of thinking is only valid in regards to low frequency signals. If a sub-woofer is used to cover the first octave and a half then driver size verses output capability is a non issue (within...
Okay Chris, Just let me know when you are ready. You can still come over to Gary Dodd's this Saturday if you want and hear some speakers over there. There is a set of A/V-1's there now. I am also only about an hour and 45 minutes away if you want to come up here. You can bring your...
Yea, you are close. You can come by just about any time and listen to anything you like. I have to go to Dallas this Saturday (actually to Dodd Audio in Garland). I can bring some stuff with me and meet you there if you like. He has some other items of interest there too (nice tube gear, big...
Hi Guys, Thanks for including me in the conversation over here. First to Christopher. You're headed in the right direction. Whether you get kits from us or Adire your $1,000. is going to go much further that it ever would purchasing a retail product, and you'll have fun building them...
Yep, I could trouble shoot it pretty quickly. I'd be interested to know what the problem is. I have yet to ever see a component failure, but have had a few tweeters fail from too much heat on them while soldering. If a customer is having a problem, I want to know why.
Not to take away from the fun of doing it yourself, but if all else fails just send it to GR Research. I have a feeling they will diagnose the problem and correct whatever is wrong with it for you free of charge.
You can have that too if you like. The tall floor standing TL enclosure is 1.4 cubic feet. The sealed box is .55 cubic feet. Optimal ported is 1.1 cubic feet and as small as 1.0 cubic feet could be used. Just change the dimensions of the box to suit you, keeping the same width and...
Hank is correct. Also keep in mind that with a sealed box the low end roll off is very gradual compared to a ported box that plays flat longer but falls quickly.
With the base and the use of the floor spikes that come with the kit it is really solid. The size of the base can be adjusted as per your discretion as many here have added. One of the great things about building kits is having the flexibility of doing some things the way you want. Thanks for...
The response of the speaker is optimized with the grills off. With the grills on the frame of the grill does effect the response a little, especially the off axis response. I typically remove the grills for listening and cover them when not in use. I also leave them on when simply...
Oh I just had a few minites to kill while one of my girls finished getting ready for church this morning. What can I say? I like what I do and do it even in my free time.
Using the dense stuff on the walls is fine, but stick with the loose fill behind the drivers and in the first part of the T-line to allow it to breath.
Thanks for all the kind words fellows.
I have sold a lot of them already considering I haven't built all the web pages for them yet. Here is the front page for that design. It will answer most of your questions. Sorry, the links don't work yet as those pages have yet to be built, but I...
