I tend to agree that their catalog has relatively few films with multichannel soundtracks.
The other issues with their video player is more troubling.
Unlike Hulu or HBO or Netflix or Prime or Disney or YouTube premium and lesser known players, Criterion’s use of the Vimeo player is not only...
Update: After doing some more research and troubleshooting with support, it appears to be a limitation of the Vimeo platform they use. It buffers far less than other streaming technology, so a networking hiccup is more likely to cause playback issues.
Along the way I learned that their...
Anyone else having technical issues with the channel lately? I can stream 4k hdr no problem from most services, but for the last week or so even SD content on criterion is buffering like mad.
I did the usual stuff, restarting the ATV, checking for updates. Still getting lots of issues with the...
There you go. You have done the experiment and found what works best for you.
If you want to try again there is a robust madvr discussion and experts including the author of the software on another forum. I’m not sure we are permitted to post links to other forums?
Your question is a little vague so I will try to parse it:
1) When you say that the Panasonic UB820 you have and the Sony x800m2 you have do not give you a satisfactory result on your projector, please share some details about what you are doing to UHD disks.
For example, the Panasonic UB820...
These are great comparisons. This is also what we would see comparing the existing release of the 1925 version versus an HD transfer. It's criminal that one of the most successful movies fo the silent era, for which known good elements exist, is only available as a crappy, muddy SD transfer...
Yeah the US site is scrubbed of this title but no the UK site. Thanks for the lead. Better price than Amazon UK. I have seen the open matte version since the days of the laserdisc so that was of course only the theatrical version.
Thanks for the tip. I had no idea. That’s awesome.
What’s the preferred UK vendor for shipping to the US?
(I wonder what other titles I should consider at the same time….)
It probably is an upgrade from the Blu-ray but I’m vaguely tempted to hold out for a few more reviews since this one doesn’t compare them. “I don't own a Blu-ray copy of Touch of Evil, so can't compare the picture quality to this 4K UHD release…” and I wonder if we’ll ever get a set that has...
My baseless opinion is that cutting material or adding back content or returning to Eden, or seeking Nirvana, is going to result in......just about the same end result in terms of viewership.
Making changes to the ceremony and or to the broadcast and expecting it to significantly impact...
Dang, I wish I had seen this post before thinking that I needed a replacement.
Turns out the copy I bought on Amazon in the fall of 2021 already has the corrected disks.
I have found that this service is the most comprehensive, including lots of obscure streamers. Even includes things like Hoopla and others that are "free via public libraries" in many places in the US.
The fact that you can create watch lists, and then when a piece of content becomes...
I wouldn't be surprised if after the current TV contract expires -- which was backward looking to when the Oscars were the most watched non sport event of most years -- the next contract is less about placing that high in the ratings, and more about selling ads.....which a longer ceremony might...
Just don't start it if you are feeling tired or plan to watch just part and finish another time. It casts a spell. One of those movies that tells you how to experience it, including educating you on its pacing early on, so it can mess with that a little like it has hypnotized you.
I'm convinced this is how at least half of what appears in a Marvel film is created. ;)
But seriously, I feel like the industry workarounds to deprive below the line people of credit that reflects their work/contribution is problematic.
No (well, that's a whole other discussion). I'm saying the recent restorations aren't even present on FilmStruck in many cases -- as in the film itself is not on FilmStruck. Example: The Breaking Point, which came out on Criterion Blu Ray last summer, but is not present on FilmStruck. (The...
Yes but in this case, one might think that advertising Criterion as part of FilmStruck would mean they are now negotiating for the combination, perhaps with a cynical staggered release approach to optimize both revenue streams.
So far, no such luck -- or at least nothing consistent.
I thought...
Anyone know what the lag time is between Criterion disk release and showing up on FilmStruck?
I've been waiting patiently for The Breaking Point to show up, since it has been out on disk for more than six months, but no dice, yet.
Agreed, this disk is amazing. Brilliant use of scanning a film at 4k and using HDR and WCG to capture what is on the original negative, without artificially enhancing or softening things.
Looking forward to this one. Saw it in theaters during the initial run and was impressed even then with the technical prowess. Glad to hear that Sony is restoring these classics correctly.
And they were sort of right... I mean, at this point, maybe I am not a true cinephile but I can't think of any movie I want that isn't available in a better than VHS position. So while I bought a few favorites on VHS, I'm glad I didn't buy more, since by the time I wanted to re-watch a lot of...
