    UHD UHD General Discussion Thread

Well, HDR is an entirely different animal, I agree that a higher dynamic range of contrast and colors is welcome, it's that the resolution side of this UHD what I think it overblown. At least from my perspective. Besides, most movies that benefit from 4K are the recent ones shot on raw digital...

    UHD UHD General Discussion Thread

I drew the line after 1080p, it's ideal even for large home projectors. But after replacing LDs for DVDs and then BDs, you know when enough is enough… at least there were compelling reasons to upgrade and replace large collections with a new format, a real impression with irrefutable difference...

    UHD UHD General Discussion Thread

The article is very misleading ignoring the facts of the 2006 market when, in fact, the Blu-ray format was lagging behind competitor HD DVD, which was dominating in titles released and sales overall. The adoption rate for HD media discs then would be somewhere around the same –proportionally– if...

    The Division… addictive, awesome.

I agree, but you know this also applies to CDs too. Not an exclusive ritual for vinyl (ritual I extend to BDs, DVDs and video games). As an old school music lover and collector of many formats during the last three decades, what you describe fits me perfectly. Oh, BTW, I also loath MP3.

I hated it… sorry, but it wasn't even good for me.

UHD Blu-ray Disc Association Completes Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Specification and Releases New Logo

Thank goodness I never adopted DIVX nor D-VHS… [pat's himself on the back]

UHD Blu-ray Disc Association Completes Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Specification and Releases New Logo

People say a lot about the limited success or 'failure' of the LaserDisc format as a mainstream home video consumer media, but come to think of it from my experience, it was the format the lasted longer in relevant use in my family. More than DVD and BD! I've been an early adopter of all three...

UHD Blu-ray Disc Association Completes Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Specification and Releases New Logo

And I'm not saying this from a blind perspective, I've sampled quite a fair amount of UHD demos coming out underwhelmed and unimpressed. Only when the screen is measured in feet, large enough to be impractical by most homes, is when I can see the benefits at a modest range. UHD-4K has its uses...

UHD Blu-ray Disc Association Completes Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Specification and Releases New Logo

I think that this new format has no chance, by current market tendencies and by the wear of constant upgrading that most enthusiasts like us are not willing to go through, especially with so little benefits and diminishing returns. Even me, early adopter all my life, LaserDisc > DVD > BD (just...

    best sounding dvd-a or sacd?

SACD and DVD-A are amazing sounding formats if properly mastered, but these are my standout Top Ten List: 1) The Beatles "Love Cirque Du Soleil" (DVD-A). 2) Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" (SACD). 3) Porcupine Tree's/Steven Wilson's entire catalog (DVD-A). 4) The Police "Collections"...

    SACD Vs. MFSL Vs. DVD-A

Let me chip in as an avid and experienced SACD/DVD-A user that: 1) Both sound AMAZING!!!* 2) Contrary to some naysayers, both are vastly superior to CD in fidelity. 3) BOTH ARE DEAD FORMATS! you can keep the "niche" term over SACD as still some indie Classical/Jazz labels take the trouble...

Tired of collecting dead formats & DENON quality sucks

Well, I'm a fairly heavy home theater and audio enthusiast and early adopter, got it from my Dad from his reel tape/LP-ßeta/LD days back in the 70's. I embraced my audio video independence just when the CD hit mainstream and experienced just about every AV format out there. But I'm getting old...

    The Last of Us

I don't know what turned me away Ron, maybe that the world of Audio and HT in general began to bore me as there was nothing new and exciting after the BD format entered the market. All that low quality streaming, cinematography distorting 3D that came afterwards -and other factors- contributed...

Dolby Atmos is in the House!

I have a hard time believing Dolby ATMOS (or any of the object-based surround formats) will be successful at home. It will be a big hit at the box office and comercial venues without a doubt, as I have no doubt it offers a better immersive experience if properly executed. But at home it does not...

    The Last of Us

Wow, my first post in nearly a decade, and I used to come here daily since the early days of the forum. Well, this game is awesome, better still on the PS4 with the added 60fps effect and resolution.

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

Thankfully the issue was solved replacing the HDMI video board a week later (HUGE BOARD! it covers the entire side panel of the receiver!) and so far almost a year later, no dropouts and all 3 HDMI ports fireing on all corners thru hours and hours of BD, PS3, DVD, Cable, etc. I forgot about...

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

Markus, Don't worry, I just got in touch with my local Yamaha dealer and they are working on a solution. I'm pushing a replacement as the unit is so new and I am reluctant to have it serviced. Plus, Yamaha's Web support recommended a replacement unit as there have been quite a lot of faulty...

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

So far all I've come up with my search is that there is no firmware update whatsoever for the 2700. So where did this come from? Even so, there is no sure fact of what I just said. The only thing for sure is that others have had the same issues (including Dave from Audioholics) and no official...

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

I've been searching like crazy over at AVS Forums for the RX-V2700 Firmware Update with no luck. Also throughout the Internet about the subject, same results. Not even a thread of hint over this issue at Yamaha's Website. Any help please?

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

Thanks Markus! Can you please point me the link to the appropriate thread in that Forum? How exactly do I update the firmware of that thing? Via the Ethernet hookup? The RS-232? Baffling!

    Yamaha RX-V2700 HDMI Video Dropouts

My Receiver RX-V2700 is having Video blackouts thru HDMI after it runs for a while. My same DENON DVD-2910 DVD player has been flawless for about a year directly connected to my Panasonic HDTV Plasma... I just tried (today) the HDMI switching for the first time since I am expecting a PS3, and...

Well folks, an update to my dilemma/drama. As a matter of fact it happened to be that the Plasma unit was indeed defective, and all my "paranoid" delusions were true. The good news is that my local electronics dealer agreed without hesitation to exchange the unit with another sealed-box sample...

Yeah Paul, I was thinking the same thing ;-) I would like to know if there is a ISF certified office around here. Parker: I just purchased a DENON DVD-2910 Universal DVD deck to replace my very old Pioneer Elite DV-05 and there is a significant improvement using component progressive...

Steve, man, thanks a lot! this is the kind of tech-savvy explanation that I was looking for. Not to underestimate my fellow HT dudes that helped me tune down my paranoia, but this is what I needed to focus and unwind. Now, to answer Doug again, I sat down today and watched a trio of nice...

Paul, Jeff, Doug, thanks for slapping me out of my paranoia dudes. I needed a little reality splash of cold water. Yes, I can be suffering "electronics hypocondriac disphoria" especially every time I get new gear. It's only that Plasmas are a new territory for me and I had no previous experience...

Allan, sounds quite reasonable, your explanation that is. I've seen this issue replicated on other plasmas since I posted this, plasmas in dealer stores, although not in the same way. Maybe because these displays are not calibrated and have the contrast pushed to the max where shades are limited...
