    International Sergio Leone Blu-ray thread

I recently did a post on a deleted/unused scene from For A Few Dollars more . (most of this is not available on any blu ray). Some of the stills have been around for years, but there are many new ones here. http://theeditroomfloor.blogspot.com/2020/03/a-lost-scene-from-for-few-dollars-more.html

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

Once MGM started recutting the film and remixing the sound in the 1990's, it's suffered from sync issues since. It's somewhat ironic since the entire film was post-dubbed in 1967, and with purely analog tech they were able to keep it properly in sync, once it went digital it went out of sync.

Well, I feel like a teal color correction is a choice...you're right about it being semantics.. but to me this is less a deliberate color correction..that's why I chose to call it a "cast". I think Mr. Harris is on the money about the negative having color loss.

Overall the new transfer is quite nice (sharp, nice grain, uncropped), but it does have a bluish/greenish "cast" to it. I tried adjusting the color on my projector to offset it, but it didn't really work. Surprised they could not compensate for some of the turned color on the negative with...

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare9/robbery_blu-ray.htm From these screenshots and description it looks really waxy and the detail has all been scrubbed away...not sure what happened. If anybody else gets the disc would love to know your opinion of it in motion...

Haha yes, it's certainly a stretch. In the end, even if I had that script in hand, the information is the same, Kino's disc is neither the release version or the uncut version, it's another one of those "hybrid" cuts.

A copy of the Fafdm continuity script is in the Yale archives and accessible to the public. Anybody here from Connecticut? https://archives.yale.edu/repositories/11/archival_objects/453738 I might give them a call and see if they can look at a couple specific pages for me.

A guess can be had by looking at the exact runtime of the 91 laserdisc (which I believe to be sourced from a cut 67 U.S. release print.) However I'll have to do some math since it was encoded at 29.97....let me get back to you.

A friend reminded me there are photos of the FAFDM U.A. Continuity script cover from previous auction sales and it gives us more information (I wish I had access to the full document!): Firstly, this was prepared In October 1966 and the film wasn't released until May 1967. Secondly the...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

When MGM did the 1997 version they produced extras on the DVD that specifically pointed out all the shots cut for the 1967 release prints. All of those corresponded to the previous home video release (1991-1996). Some of the shots cut also had specific reasoning (I. E. not naming the man with no...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

To the best of my knowledge based on various home video releases collected over the years: First, UA/the Italians created a fully uncut English dubbed print master. This is the version that was released on home video throughout the 80's. Secondly, UA trimmed that master for 1967 release...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

Absolutely. I think the easiest way to sum up the issues with FAFDM is this - at the onset of home video, the film was released in the U.S. and Italy completely uncut, remained that way for about a decade and has been losing bits of footage since.

Still trying to reach some conclusions on the missing footage based on researching past releases. Here is a comparison of the sections of the beating scene that were cut between a variety of releases: Grey=missing footage. As far as I can tell, the missing dialog portion was removed from...

I think the new transfer looks pretty solid and more natural than the old disc. The old MGM disc was certainly the best of the trilogy, but they cranked up the sharpening giving the grain and details a harsh video look to me. Absolutely, they nailed the transfer. I'm thrilled the feedback from...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

I agree, it's all extremely convoluted and I sometimes forget more than I remember! It was the Italian restoration team who claimed the beating scene was never put out in the uncut version because they were trying to account for why the Italian negative is trimmed but the Italian soundtrack...

This certainly helps, and I appreciate you weighing in. Of course, I would assume Mr. Tarzi is correct, having dealt with the elements. You'll have to understand where I'm coming from, in the past home video companies have been wrong about Leone's films. It was claimed by the Italians that the...

FOD - Italian RHV yes. Harder to find than the German and the difference is not huge... FAFDM - the only uncut version is the German, but it doesn't use the Eng 1967 mono mix, it uses a mix based off the 1997 MGM restoration which has issues with sync and some music recutting. The new Kino...

Hello Mr. Harris, first off let me say that I agree that the Kino looks fantastic. I also cannot begin to compete with your professional knowledge of film restoration. Unlike the GBU release where I had access to an original UA continuity script and 5 or 6 release prints, for FAFDM I can only go...

I haven't seen a single complaint about the image, looks great! Just a shame it's still cut by about a minute when most of the material cut is still present on the Italian negative. My guess is they didn't want to do a new 5.1 track. And a shame Kino used the 1997 mono track which is out of sync...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ For a Few Dollars More - in Blu-ray

Film looks and sounds great, extras are great. Still cut by about a minute, they have based their cut on the 1997 dvd, not on any of the actual 1965 or 67 releases. Shame its not uncut, it's such a nice restoration. Hopefully someday someone will use this master as a starting point and we'll...

Thanks. The sources here are the 2007 Ripley's bonus features and web videos put out by the Leone group to promote the re-releases in Italy back in 2014. Some of the web videos shared a similar green palatte as the Kino disc. The Kino does include one of the web videos in HD quality, but the...
