A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

iTunes users can currently buy the good version on iTunes. If you do, download it to your hard drive before they "upgrade" it.

A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

Wise choice. Better grab that disc while it's still around. I'm waiting for reports on which version iTunes has up. If it's the previous version, let's hope they don't "upgrade" it. That's the tails side of the iTunes coin. Most of the time it comes up heads, and you get a superior updated...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Great Escape (Criterion) - in Blu-ray

Thanks for the link. I agree with you. Differences very apparent. I'm still very curious as to Robert Crawford's thoughts from viewing them in motion. (I don't believe RAH has compared the two.)

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I'm also having problems with Film Noir Classic Collection Vol.4. On the Illegal/The Big Steal disc "The big Steal" will to play. This disc looks perfect. I can't see anything wrong with the surface. The reason for the failure seems to be related to the strange menu system on the double title...

This is a great resource. Thanks so much. Just to be clear - these are all DVDs not Blu-rays?

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

Thanks! You're correct. The mould codes are KK: KK17, KK2G, KK3W, and KKBN. The master codes only remain on three of the seven discs. The rest have rotted away. They are L780, L779, LV76

Warner DVD's not working thread - watch to make sure they still play

I have a Universal Sturges set that is almost completely rotted. Factory code is IFPI L7780. This set was purchased in 2009. I've had a few other DVDs rot over the years, but I've tossed them without checking the codes. I wasn't aware of this thread (issue) until the other day. Although I've...

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

I think we need this thread to deal with the question of what are "these" in Osato's post. Not only sold, but promoted on iTunes by Warner Archives, as Warner Archive titles - hence the confusion about what "these" are. Robert explains it very clearly below, but still - those are an awful lot...

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

Thank you. You guys have hit on the reason for my confusion: Which titles are Warner Archive? "American in Paris" is on iTunes in the Warner Archive collection, so I assumed it was a Warner Archive title. I popped the disc in for comparison without noticing that the disc does not have the Warner...

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

For my own curiosity, I did a comparison last night of two iTunes HD versus Blu-ray Warner Archive titles: American in Paris, and Jezebel. I’m confident Jezebel is not the same master. I am also confident that American in Paris is the same master. I am not an professional, and I’m not claiming...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

That’s a good idea. Thanks. I never thought of that. I have compared the new UHD, the new Blu-ray, and both the new iTunes 4K versions – HDR, and SDR. Of those, my preference is definitely the Blu-ray. I'm with RAH (and the other disappointeds) on this one. None of the 4K versions look right to...

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

I believe you regarding any titles you have owned or specified. I take It as valuable confirmation of titles which have not been updated. Thank you. I also believe George.

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

For Warner Archive fans, this is an important question, but I’m not sure this is always the case. There has been a discussion of this question in the past. With more than one title, I have heard George Feltenstein announce, on his Warner Archive podcast, that the remaster would be the HD version...

Warner Archive Blu-rays vs. iTunes HD Digitals

It is true, although it doesn't happen with every release. You're correct that many Warner Archive new Blu-ray releases don't get updated immediately. Many Criterions don't either. They often leave their remastering efforts "disc only" for a while, to recoup their costs. But after enough months...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

Thanks. I've owned the 2012 disc since it's release. My comment about iTunes was a blanket wish for their customers. They should always offer the best version available. I fear that as this is a new 4K transfer being promoted by Paramount, they may update it under the mistaken idea that this new...

A Few Words About A few words about…™ To Catch a Thief (redux) – in Blu-ray

Full disclosure: I own the 2012, and haven't seen the 2020. I‘ll accept RAH’s evaluation that this new release is a step down (overall) from the 2012. As such I‘m glad iTunes has retained the “better” version. Let’s hope that lasts, for the sake of iTunes customers. One wants the best version...

Just checked. Also showing on iTunes in HD, although without viewing we can't really be sure if it's an HD transfer or merely upscaled.

Me too. I saw "Visions" in a theater on first release in 1992. As the DVD has not been available for years, I wanted to be sure that new cinematography lovers were aware of it. (I confess it's my favorite.) I would love to see it re-released and updated with the superb new transfers we now...

Image Makers: The Adventures of America's Pioneer Cinematographers

Indeed we all hope it will be released on disc. I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned "Visions of Light" the 1992 documentary on cinematography produced by the AFI and NHK, written by Todd McCarthy. I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to eagerly seek it out. Difficult to find, but worth every bit...
