    Favorite Old School 70mm Cinemas

Thank you for posting those images. Further proof that the film advertising and presentations of an era now passed, was far superior and so much more inviting. Growing up in Auckland, I recall seeing many of those films advertised. Some were at the Cinerama on Queen St. and some at other CBD...

    Halloween Ends (2022)

This is really one of the most convoluted and messy film franchises from a slasher film series. Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street came with fantasy elements attributed to them, with FT13th part 6 turning Jason into an unstoppable zombie. They could bend and flex these series into...

    Death On the Nile (2022)

I have an opportunity tomorrow to see it in Digital, but on a 17m wide screen with Dolby Atmos so may be worth it.

I don't know how Tony's character was portrayed in Laurents original play, yet having Kushner and Spielberg portray him as an ex-con who made an angry mistake, (this works in well with the salt factory rumble sequence and Tony getting triggered after trying to keep his cool), is not detrimental...

This is why these award shows are just really about pomp and ceremony. It promotes and endorses the industry. They may hold meaning for those that can agree with the choices made, yet since best is all subjective and time will mark a classic, (and classic for whom?), most of it is about...

And Spielberg's WSS is in nowhere near lousy. I like to see it as a film standing on its own, within its own merits. Its been 60yrs since the original version of the stage production. Many wouldn't even know of the original, or perhaps even the musical itself. A buddy of mine, same generation...

Not really, because it has already been made before so technically and objectively it is. I just didn't refer to it as a remake so to speak, but a reboot. I think Spielberg referred to it as a re-imagining or something similar.

Even Spielberg doesn't consider his WSS as a remake. I can't recall the interview though when he claimed this.

Remember though, WSS as a stage presentation as well, can come in different forms and interpretations. Its not just a cinema experience.

Oh, so you've already seen WSS, just not theatrically? I wouldn't have dreamed viewing it in any other format first other than in the cinema first. I've seen it 4 times and the first 3 times I specifically chose the sessions I went too to ensure it was presented on a decent sized screen. There...

Tootsie for me is classic comedy and a rare bird, in that the humor just flows naturally out of the situations, without forcing anything on the viewer. All performances are top notch and it still is an interesting social commentary on gender roles without conflating anything. Its got an early...

My choice for picture in 1982 was Tootsie. I had no beef with Gandhi winning best director but I don't feel it was deserving of picture award.

Its all subjective and like someone else has commented, no one can say what best is. It is easy to reflect now on past Academy choices and time is really the true teller of a films standing and its classic status, not the agenda of voters at the time so much. Films can also have minor...

Official Oscars 2022 Nominations And Discussion Thread

I never went in with any reservations or judgements regarding it being a remake. Its more of reboot if one wants to play semantics. Its a great score, Spielberg has a fantastic reputation as a movie director and I had 100% faith in him that he would make it work and even improve upon the...

I will have to reserve any formed opinion until I see Dog. There could be a spilt as well, between director and picture. This has happened quite frequently the past 20yrs.

I'm not getting this anti-Spielberg sentiment for WSS. I loved it. The film wasn't over-choregraphed, it looked fantastic, it sounded fantastic, it was full of energy and dynamo, it was grittier, more believable in terms of the stories conflict and while the original is still a classic, I think...

I don't know what it is about WSS that has distracted viewers from wanting to see it. I couldn't wait and it was held back a year due to the pandemic. It was my event movie, which only come around once in a while now, as Marvel and DC appear to be this generations big crowd pullers. WSS needs...

I haven't seen Dog yet, but I do feel the Academy is itching to reward Campion. A woman did win best director last year too for Nomadland. I have only seen 2 of the nominees so far and West Side Story was tremendous and fully deserving of its nominations. It is interesting to note that both...

I have only seen 2 on the best picture list so far: Don't Look Up and West Side Story. I didn't care for Don't Look Up at all and slogged through it in 3 sittings. Will look forward to watching The Power Of The Dog. I haven't heard any personal word of mouth praise for the film, only how slow...

West Side Story – Spielberg remake

Respectfully, it is! Why does it have to spelt out when the Spanish dialogue is an aspect of who these people really were and nothing was lost in the visual representation to convey what was going on?

Michael Cimino Passed Away at 77!

If I was in the mood, I don't think I would have much issue watching this. My biggest concern is that looks a bit grim depressing and not that engaging. Cimino knew what he wanted and his success with Deer Hunter I think perhaps swelled his head a little too much. He came across as an...

Michael Cimino Passed Away at 77!

Cimino appeared to be his own worst enemy by all accounts I have read, yet he knew how to present a film in his prime as director. I will get around to Heaven's Gate one day, as it does look largely unappealing, but I enjoy Thunderbolt & Lightfoot and Year Of The Dragon and love the The Deer...

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

Looks quite cool. Not a Marvel or DC fan by any means, but I did see Venom at the cinema on a giant curved V-Max screen and Dolby Atmos. I enjoyed it! Perhaps more because of the darker horror type presentation of theme and Tom Hardy. I doubt it, but would like to anticipate an R rating for...

    The Horror Movie Appreciation Thread

And for a good horror film to work, they have to set the tone and atmosphere right from the start. Its substance has to reflect in its style. That is why I find two films I have listed on here The Funhouse - 81' and The Hunger -83' work wonders for me. That is perhaps why the other one I listed...

Interesting, but tame and pretty lackluster early 80's horror effort. Have seen a couple of times and wasn't impressed on either viewing. It reminds me a little of the creepy slasher/thriller Death Valley - 82' in style, which I prefer, even if that one is rather tame too.

I have seen Lords Of Salem twice on blu ray. It reminded me of a Ken Russell film in parts. I still don't really get the ending.
