A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tex Avery Screwball Classics - Volume 1 - in Blu-ray

He directed 65 cartoons (two remakes were made years after he left), so they could be done in as little as two more, easy.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tex Avery Screwball Classics - Volume 1 - in Blu-ray

Sunday delivery via Wal-Mart and Fedex. Clean bill of health here... All cartoons look and sound fine for the most part (Wags to Riches has a similarly distorted track as Daredevil Droopy, but nowhere near as obvious), and are indeed uncut.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tex Avery Screwball Classics - Volume 1 - in Blu-ray

It clearly was poorly filtered if you listen to the other versions of the cartoon where there is no distortion and doesn't sound like it was recorded in a bathroom. I doubt YouTube compression is the issue here. Other MGM cartoons have had this issue in the past, to a far more extreme degree...

OK but what does that have to do with the sound being worse here than on the DVD?

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tex Avery Screwball Classics - Volume 1 - in Blu-ray

I do have Daredevil Droopy in 16mm and it sounds fine there. But the cartoon on the Boomerang app and the Droopy DVD sounds much better than that YouTube clip. Sounds like someone just threw a noise reduction filter on the track for the BD. I will say that the color looks excellent and we're...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Tex Avery Screwball Classics - Volume 1 - in Blu-ray

The preview clips posted by Warner Archive look very nice, but Daredevil Droopy and Symphony in Slang have obviously distorted audio noise reduction. Are these the only titles affected? Also, Avery went to MGM in 1941, and he was gone in 1953 (after he was fired). He only directed 65 cartoons...

Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 3 (Blu-ray)

Just what's there ostensibly. They probably only had a couple months to work on this, on top of all the other Vol. 2 and 3 cartoons.

Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 3 (Blu-ray)

Got this from B&N Friday finally. Another slam-dunk restoration wise, even if this is where the cartoons take a nosedive. The two-color of "A Wolf in Sheik's Clothing" looks strange, reminiscent of an Ub Iwerks Cinecolor cartoon. I have a 16mm print that has better range, even if it's faded, but...

Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 3 (Blu-ray)

B&N shipped mine Friday - but won't be here until Thursday? BTW, in case anyone is interested, I started a classic animation history podcast with my friend, animation director Bob Jaques, entitled Cartoon Logic. Our first episode was all about the second Famous Popeye set that came out back in...

Press Release Warner Archive Press Release: Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 3 (Blu-ray)

Give them time before drawing conclusions. B&N has the pre-order for The Jetsons still up (release date 9/10), it might be bit before Popeye Vol. 3, which's release date seems so randomly... quick, turns up.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Thin Man - in Blu-ray

I mean, that's what I was told about the one single title and the insane delayed shipping. Doesn't make me a cultist just for relaying that information. Clearly something rotten is afoot in the WAC-Amazon relationship if this is happening again and again and again.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Thin Man - in Blu-ray

You can believe what you want - none of it makes sense to me either. All I know is that Amazon at least had ample copies of the Popeye discs in hand ahead of release. It seemed like an anomaly until this started happening with every new WAC title. I have no idea what is actually going on (Is...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Thin Man - in Blu-ray

According to my sources, WAC has provided Amazon plenty of copies of these releases. I know for a fact Amazon had ample copies of the Popeye Vol. 2 disc people are just starting to get now, a full two months after the release date. Seems to be some sort of standoff going on, so best to go elsewhere.

Blu-ray Review Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Blu-ray Review (Twilight Time)

OK, just to spell it out, I meant "blue gel" as a label for how ROCK HUNTER, THE KING AND I, etc. look on the TT releases. THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT doesn't look like that on Technicolor film - maybe for that one scene, and that frame does rather resemble how it looks in Tech, but not for the...

Blu-ray Review Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Blu-ray Review (Twilight Time)

Hopefully never, if these conditions continue to prevail. I've seen it in Technicolor, and had a print for several years. There's no "blue gel" in it.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Thin Man - in Blu-ray

The WBShop site is terrible. Slow shipping at a high cost. Also, a friend got his credit card info stolen from that site, so I avoid it at all costs. B&N gave me a cheaper price, and faster shipping at a lower cost, so with Amazon in its current war with WB, I know my choice for WAC releases.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Thin Man - in Blu-ray

Mine arrived from B&N yesterday. Easily the best I've seen a title of this vintage look, certainly the best this particular classic has. Clearly they went the extra mile, it's essentially flawless. Audio is quite good, too.

Blu-ray Review Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Blu-ray Review (Twilight Time)

Without getting into the color timing—which is completely wrong when the whites of everyone’s eyes is blue; clearly a faded element poorly color corrected is the issue here—ROCK HUNTER also has heavy digital manipulation and the grain structure looks like a screen door was placed on top of the...

Press Release HTF EXCLUSIVE! Twilight Time February 2019 Release Announcements

WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER? looks horrible. All of Tashlin's cartoon color candy has been flattened out, it almost looks like 2-Color Cinecolor. Comparison of the Europe BD at top, new TT BD at bottom. Very hard for me to say "PASS" on a release of a Top 10 favorite, but this is vandalism.

Pre-Order Celebrating Mickey (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

Because I hate myself, I picked this up while shopping the other night. I knew they'd be the usual trainwrecks we're accustomed to from Disney, and this didn't disappoint: flat colors, grain removal, all to make them look "fresh and modern." But what crackhead redid the titles for these? Most of...

And back in the Golden Collection days, the same mindset bemoaned how the popular Warner characters and Chuck Jones (arguably the most popular director) were heavily featured (until the last one, which they knew would be the last, and is why it was loaded with the misc. and less brilliant...

And before the Disney Treasures, what else was there besides $14.99 VHS tapes with 3 cartoons a piece? It's historically proven Disney Home Video does not care for the cartoon shorts. The only comprehensive shorts release until 2001 was the Mickey B&W laserdisc set. The Disney Treasures only...
