    Axiom vs. Paradigm

i absolutely love my qs4 on surround duty. but since you're talking about the qs8, then id have to say go for them (my uncle ordered an axiom HT which included the qs8 and i must say that the additional price over the qs4 is justified). because of their quadpole design, the qs series works well...

what's bad about the panasonic F85's video quality?

well i picked up the F85 at CC for $130 last week. havnt had a chance to sit through a whole movie with it yet, just a few demos. everything seems great. i especially like the mirror finish over the display panel. the tray is very quiet, too, which is a plus. i'll watch a movie on it later, but...

what's bad about the panasonic F85's video quality?

richard, you were one of the people that didnt like the F85's pq. im glad you like your dvd player now. what type adjustments fixed the video for you? so is the all-in-1 chip on the panny F85 is ok?

what's bad about the panasonic F85's video quality?

i did some searching, and saw that some people didnt like the video quality on the F85. what's bad about it exactly? and can anyone give some suggestions for decent ~$200 dvd player? i dont really care about sacd or dvd-a, im just looking for something to replace my yamaha DV-S5350. damn thing...

    Portable Headphones?

i have no idea about what's good now. i got a denon ahd-950 a while back. very good headphones. noticeably more/better bass than the sr60s, and more detailed too. they also are a bit more closed than the sr60s. though they are going for about $130 US last time i checked. a good site to check out...

    Any DIY Tempest owners?

heh you should really have this thread moved to the diy section (this thread doesnt really belong here i dont think). you'll get more help there. anyways, i have one in a 12 cu.ft sonotube. yes, it is a beast, but i love it! she goes subsonic with authority, and it was fairly easy to build...

Do speakers really "break in" or does your ear just finally relent?

kevitra, did you do a double blind test? if so, then could you consistently pick out which speaker had the old driver? sorry, but i am very skeptical when there hasnt been a test done, or any documented proof to back it up, especially about something like speaker breaking (or other hotly debated...

Do speakers really "break in" or does your ear just finally relent?

i do not believe there is such thing as "breaking in" the speakers, but just your ears. you should realize that the drivers are vibrating thousands of times a minute, and the cross-overs have electricity running through them constantly. if there is such thing as a break-in period, then it would...

    Rethinkin GR Research

brian, sorry if im a bit skeptical, but did you do an a/b comparison, or was the difference just THAT noticable? i just dont see how $70 worth of capacitors can do that :b

thanks brian. could you tell me if the sonicaps make a big difference vs. the axon capacitors?

    Rethinkin GR Research

i have a few questions george. is the blackhole 5 any better than wal-mart polyfil batting? and what is the sonicap upgrade? im just trying to get in a little research cos i might be making the a/v1's myself, as soon as i can find a use for them. i've had my m22ti's for about 6 months now and...

About to make the SVS jump from a Sony wm40.

well if you have the time/tools, then i recommend going a diy tempest route (tuned to ~16hz), because its cheaper, and much more satisfying. but if you got the money, then buy the lowest tuned svs you can get. you'll only loose a few db in headroom, but you'll never get close to them in a small...

    Grado SR-40

i got the denon ahd-950. very nice headphones, though i think they're about $125 from the internet. i almost got the sr-80, but after reading about so many people with the "grattle," i got the denons instead. they have better bass response than the sr-60, and i think they are a bit more...

Wow, my SVS can't handle the new ATOC DVD!!

my 340L ebs tempest had no problem with any scene from lotr, aotc, or the THX scene from aotc (cave demo where the ball explodes). and im running a bit hot. just to see how much headroom i had left, i cranked up the bass...well just consider me a smiling fool with a tempest.

a thread for my small questions

oh, and im using the PE 300-794 250w amp. i think i'll just use some male quick disconnects to connect to connect the amp to the binding post via some 12ga.

a thread for my small questions

you guys know that a circle jig would make the job much much easier? hehe i had to use freehand with a jigsaw and a router. so looks a bit sloppy, but i think if i can make a good seal, everything will be ok, right? the progress has come to screeching halt due to school. i will work again on...

a thread for my small questions

ok. stupid question time. how do i connect the amp to the sub? i went to every page on the compiled sonosub list, but i didnt find anything saying how to make the connection. there is a red and a black wire coming from the back of the amp that i think is supposed to be connected to the sub, but...

a thread for my small questions

    for the equation 8466.4 R^2 ---------- - 1.463 R = Lv (Vb) Fb^2 my Vb = 12 ft^3, Fb = 16.5, R = 2". but for my 2 flared 4" ports, the effective radius is 2.83", giving me 16.6" for 1 port, and 33.26" for 2 ports. this is in direct violation of the 5x the port diameter rule-of-thumb. i...

a thread for my small questions

hehe thanks greg. the lengths were off by several inches if you doubled the length of the single port equation. im sticking to the EBS alignment w/ 340L and a pair of 4" ports. i went with flared ports to help reduce port noise (even if it doesnt, it gives me a little peace of mind )...

a thread for my small questions

hello John. thank you for answering my first questions. being my first diy sub, of course i run into some problems. i asked for a sheet of 3/4" thick mdf at my home depot, but got 5/8" thick on accident (the HD guy just grabed one of the sheets). so my question is if 1.25" is thick enough...

a thread for my small questions

1). is the equation for using precision port (flared) correct? how do you manipulate this equation if you are using 2 ports? Chris Tsutsui, maybe you can help me here because they are what you used iirc. im using a pair of 4" flared kits, and dont know how long to make them. the equation is...

What height should surrounds be set at?

i also have my surrounds (axiom qs4 - quadpole) at ear level a few feet behind the listening position. i chose this setup because it sounded better than having them a few feet above ear level. this setup may work well for me because of the quadpole design, but i would recommend that you at least...

why do we use mdf instead of real wood? is it just to save money, or is mdf better than wood as an enclosure?

makin a list, checking it twice...

oops. im getting a 24" x 5' of sonotube thanks for the reply. i think i will go w/ a tempest + the PE amp now, and upgrade later if the av15 is significantly better. i'll get something for legs, maybe i'll make some w/ left over mdf. very unique looking subs you made there. i like 'em

makin a list, checking it twice...

...before i start ordering stuff. getting a 24" x 5' section. will prolly make it ~4' tall (shooting for ~10ft^3) tempest ava250 single input cup (binding post) 12ga home depot wire 4" flared port (getting a pair of these) 64oz. of polyfil and mdf, plywood, glue, and all that other...

a few questions, because its almost time for me to diy!

oh wow. i didnt think a dual tempest would cost so much. mike strassburg's sono cost ~$930 iirc. i think i'll stick with the EBS powered by the ava250, something that my budget will allow me. another quick question: why do some people use dowel rods in their sono? you used them, but patrick...
