I think it's a myth that Win98 can only use 512MB but doing the following may be helpful.

I use a PII 350, 192 MB Ram, 16MB ATI All-In-Wonder running WinDVD. No problems at all.

Any one of the drives should do the job. I have a Pioneer slot drive that I've never had any problems with.

I'm no expert but I think you are better off using a good coax cable.
The main concern, I think, is if the optical connector is glass or plastic.
