For every person posting in this thread about how the film hasn't been cropped for widescreen (and to be clear, it would unavoidably have to be cropped), a widescreen release would trigger 100 more complaints from elsewhere about the film losing picture compared to prevous releases.
Perhaps so, but would any of that image at the extreme edges of the frame have been visible in theaters in 1955? I don't think this really addresses the prime question of what ratio the film was actually intended to be displayed at.
