I'm curious, if there are no problems with the original negative, why was this blu-ray prepared from, what... third-generation elements? That seems to be just as big a question as why they are screwing up the aspect ratio.
After seeing the various comparisons, it seems like the film would display very nicely at 1.66:1. And it also seems very likely that Criterion is NOT going to do this. Ah well.... nothing any of us can do about it....
I don't know-----I think the examples you have shown are cropped very close to 2:1, not 1.85:1. (At least, that is how they display on my monitor---I took a ruler and checked.) Which leads me to think, that the framing on the titles would be very tight at 1.85:1, but that the letters would fit...
