3D Blu-ray Review Treasure of the Four Crowns 3D Blu-ray Review

Difficult. Unlike most dirt and scratches, the dirt was on the lens when they photographed the film, so it’s stationary. Removing it would mean either painting it out frame by frame during moving shots, or mapping another part of the frame onto it for stationary. Both of those can introduce...

Help Save Abbott & Costello's AFRICA SCREAMS!

Not even that much—the long-shots are A&C’s camera doubles. Lou was struck ill with a bout of rheumatic fever as he was flying back to LA to shoot the film.

Help Save Abbott & Costello's AFRICA SCREAMS!

Thanks for that memory, Josh. It’s reactions like that really made this project worth it to the team.

Abbott & Costello Jack and the Beanstalk SE (1952) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

I’m not sure what VCI is using for AFRICA, but I can’t imagine them besting the 3DFA restoration; which is sources from a 4K scan off the camera negative.

3D New 3D title from the 3D Film Archive for a Kickstarter Campaign

Like I said, the split was amiable on our part, and I’ll happy to field questions from time to time.

3D New 3D title from the 3D Film Archive for a Kickstarter Campaign

To be clear—Bob has voluntarily left this forum and was not banned. He and one of the owners of this forum (whom I have no trouble with personally) had a disagreement that led to a mandate that our product will no longer be reviewed here. 3DFA wishes HTF the best of luck, and hopes that you all...

3D New 3D title from the 3D Film Archive for a Kickstarter Campaign

Management has made it expressly clear to Mr. Furmanek that he and reviews of his product are no longer welcome here, despite the traffic he has generated for this website for more than a decade.

3D New 3D title from the 3D Film Archive for a Kickstarter Campaign

Since Bob is unable to post here anymore, I am (as Associate Producer at the 3DFA) happy to field the previous questions: The elements of DYNASTY are in disastrous, but not unsalvageable conditions. This is a literal “now or never” situation, much like AFRICA SCREAMS, whose preprint elements...

    Great Dolby Atmos Scenes

TOY STORY 4 has, by far, one of the best Atmos tracks mixed, to date, and is probably the best visual representation of how far the boundaries have been pushed with Dolby Vision.

    Pre-Order The 3-D Nudie-Cuties Collection (3D Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

Strictly two of the three ‘B’s, in 3D. Think an early ‘60s issue of Playboy.

Pre-Order Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

There was never any 80-minute version. Some sources cite 75, but even that is suspect and probably a preview cut length. All period reviews and continuities state 62 min.

    Pre-Order The 3-D Nudie-Cuties Collection (3D Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

As is the 3DBR spec, it will always default to 2D if you’re not running it in 3D.

THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) on Blu-Ray - when?

That is correct. I meant to quote the previous post, but it didn’t take for some reason. And for what it’s worth, cable TV goes back to the 1950s in North America! It didn’t get its legs until the 1970s, when HBO was formed.

THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) on Blu-Ray - when?

That’s pretty much the long and short of it. They didn’t want to do THIS ISLAND EARTH, but the studio wanted a “big” film for fodder. The movie flopped big time, anyway—it got dumped in Gramercy Pictures’ lap, who didn’t know what to do with it. I remember it was on cable in mere months, which...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Footlight Parade - in Blu-ray

I haven’t picked up the Blu yet, but I was quite disappointed with the DVD audio, which sounded rolled-off and compressed. The VHS edition sounded like it had very little processing work done on it and had a very wide frequency response.

The Best-Placed Intermission Cards Of All-Time (On Blu-ray)

HOUSE OF WAX has a great intermission and pickup point that really feels built into the screenplay (because it is.)

2.00-1. Unlike many studio titles after the widescreen transition, we had enough inter-studio memos to be quite certain on this.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Footlight Parade - in Blu-ray

You folks are being rather unkind to poor Ruby Keeler, whose singing wasn’t as particularly as bad as her co-stars (Joan Blondell couldn’t carry a single note and speak-sang most of her songs), and whose dancing was buck-and-wing, a style of wooden-soles hoofing admittedly better heard on the...

David Lynch says forthcoming Lost Highway Blu-ray falls short

Even the best condition negative will need to be graded after being scanned. A scanner’s sensor isn’t going to “read” an untimed element the same way making a print photochemically with the correct timings would, so shot-to-shot matching has to be done. This is especially obvious from one camera...

THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) on Blu-Ray - when?

The correct aspect ratio is 2.00-1, but 1.85-1 is close enough. The film is protected for 1.37-1 like most flat films from that period, but widescreen is what the compositions are made for.

The Wizard of Oz 4K UHD 80th Anniversary

I always love the “but the filmmakers wouldn’t do it that way!” argument—as if any film producer past or present wouldn’t jump at the chance to augment their film with technological alterations (well-done or not) that would sell more tickets to their films. Aside from filmmakers griping about...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Becky Sharp - in Blu-ray

Most of the complaints from directors I’ve read (including Mamoulian) is that she was a bit of a tyrant and quite disagreeable, which, whatever gender, is not welcome on a Hollywood set from any era. And to push the sexist narrative is somewhat disingenuous, since Mamoulian and other...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Becky Sharp - in Blu-ray

There have been PD-label VHS copies of the shortened, Cinecolor print (from Film Classics) out there, but my understanding is that this is the first commercial release of the UCLA restoration.
