If Criterion were to include the movie in two different aspect ratios.....maybe it would be better 1:37.1 and 1:78.1 instead of 1:37.1 and 1:85.1. At least the titles work out better that way. And it wouldn't hurt to see a sliver more image at the top and bottom during the actual movie...

The image that Ronald posted earlier from Criterion has the full image captured by the camera (see the rounded corners). I took (approximately the same) screenshot from the demo video downsizing it to match Criterion's example shot. I lined up the two images and then drew the red line around...

I compared 1.37 with 1.66. I think removing any more than 1.66 cuts off too much image. Makes framing too tight.

Sides shouldn't be trimmed at all - just top and bottom - to adjust aspect ratio.

What's the reason that you're trimming the sides on every other screenshot?

Have you seen the 3 minute clip from Criterion's restored Summertime on their website? It looks phenomenal and crisp. And I'm glad they left it full frame. There's so much to see that would have been lost. It's a time capsule from that period and I wouldn't want to miss the peripheral stuff...

Granted the 2 shots are size reduced, not 1080p, but the grain seems like it's single source from the negative - not Eastmancolor OCN grain slightly blurred and overlayed by Technicolor's YCM separations grain. Actually they aren't size reduced they're 1500 x 1112 - very slightly larger than...

It appears that Criterion did 4k scan the Eastmancolor OCN for the new blu ray. These are from the Amazon listing. Compared to Lord Dalek's screenshot from Criterion Channel:

The Japanese blu ray isn't bootleg. Notice it has Paramount's logo and Janus Films is credited twice with their logo too.

Interesting. So the source for Criterion’s streaming version of Summertime is still the YCM-separations-composited negative they made 25 years ago. Color fringing from misalignment is visible here and there. I hope Criterion didn’t use that element for their 4k scan.

Does the Criterion Channel Stream have “windowboxed” titles like the Japanese transfer? “NOTE: The opening credits (one minute 29 seconds) are heavily picture-boxed.”

For whatever it's worth...... The framing on the dvd (compared to the Japanese blu ray) is quite a bit tighter. Notice the wrought iron railing on the right, Rossano's belt on the bottom and a little more space above cupid's curlicue in the square of sky at the top; there's a slight bit more...
