Wyler ended his career better than Stevens, Hitchcock or Wilder did. Huston ended well, Zinneman, too. It's rough to stick the landing when your skills are diminished and you've got a lot of 'Yes' people around you.
"The Year of Living Dangerously," "The Devil's Doorway," "The Tall Target," "The Pride of the Marines," "The Prisoner of Zenda" (both versions), "Scaramouche," John Ford's "The Fugitive," "Desperate Journey," "Executive Suite," "The Narrow Margin," "Random Harvest," "The Late Show," "Night of...
Rock Hudson's problems with James Dean didn't have anything to do with being turned down (although, I have no doubt that may have happened), but rather Dean's style of acting seemed disrespectful and time wasting to Hudson. In addition to Geroge Stevens' love of numerous takes per camera setup...
um.................."Alice Adams," "Swing Time," "The Talk of the Town," "Gunga Din," "The More the Merrier," "Shane," "A Place in the Sun," "I Remember Mama," "Penny Serenade," "Woman of the Year," and "Giant"....maybe you didn't like some of them as much as others, but to call him "vastly...
"Lawrence" arrived today. One very minor dent on the front left-hand corner/rim that I couldn't see with the wrapping covering it. One scratch on the back, but it isn't very noticeable. Not too bad for a steelbook via the mail.
If you didn't buy the MGM release, buy this one. If you're a fan of the film and have the MGM release, still buy this one!
It's has a similar look to the HD version on the MGMHD channel.
George Stevens was a big fan of lap dissolves around this time (i.e. A Place in the Sun, not so much Shane) and therefore that's what they did.
I bought mine today in an actual store!!!
Such a shame this won't be released on blu-ray. I can't upgrade to 4K at the moment nor at any time in the foreseeable future. So pissed I won't be able to see one of my top 20 films of all-time in this new master. WB should be ashamed of themselves.
Yes, I'm sure it is. But Vintage Stock has it for $12.99 used at one of their stores. You call, order it, they ship it, and you get a $5 coupon in the package to cover the shipping.

I recall from the DVD's that the various members of the member-states of the empire arriving at the German fort looked really overbaked. I guess that look has been continued on these blu-ray releases. Oh, well.
